I hate using this as an example, but the reception for this is well above average on most other sites
I've seen. Again, I don't think that matters at all in itself, but I don't get why it's found such a
good reception about everywhere else and such a mixed reception here. Marrow was kind of the same way
for a long time though.

yeah, but marrow was good from the get go. never understood the hate for that album at all. this doesn't have any interesting melodies

Well a 3.5 average is fairly high

This album took quite a few listens to appreciate fully for me so I can't help but feel that at least some people may not have given it a proper chance to grow. There's a lot of nuances going on under the loudness that take time to pick out.
Couple that with the fact that the first couple of reviews were negative and it doesn't exactly encourage people to give the album a fair chance.

"I don't get why it's found such a good reception about everywhere else and such a mixed reception here."
Weird, idk why that happened. Then again I could a shit about what the collective of this site or other sites think.

Here's "The Astral Dialogue". Melancholy Spirit is still uploading. Sorry that the vox are drowned out but you still get the gist of it.

"yeah, but marrow was good from the get go."
Agreed. It's seriously my favourite Agalloch album aside from The Mantle.

And here's their rather fast-paced and shortened rendition of "The Melancholy Spirit"

but the reception for this is well above average on most other sites
metal fans are probably the most unobjective group of people around when it comes to music, and agalloch are one of those bands (like opeth or mastadon) whose listeners are comprised of mostly rabid fanboys who will eat up anything they do without caring how good it actually is
the average on rym is a 3.5, which is the lowest in their catalogue, and almost all of the reviews on the front page are 3 stars or less. once the hype dies down for this its gonna be pretty universally seen as a failure.

Probably, plus considering how this doesn't have anywhere near as many ratings as their others, it will prob go down more as it gets more.

"I don't get why it's found such a good reception about everywhere else and such a mixed reception here."
because of noctus and crysis duh

"once the hype dies down for this its gonna be pretty universally seen as a failure."
Pretty much the opposite of what happened to marrow and I could very well see the same thing happening here

you are severely overestimating the impact of my opinion

i tended to think that the only reason marrow was jumpy at the start was because it was such a vast shift from the direction of ashes, and everyone was just in shock. the only difference here from marrow is that its 1000x more boring and is completely devoid of all interesting/innovative ideas.
its the same kind of direction, just poorly executed. marrow was poorly executed too, but at least it was kind of interesting for what they were trying to do.

If the drums were much louder and the bass sounded normal The Astral Dialogue would sound right at home on Ashes imo

Marrow is miles better than this. But yeah Hyperion summed it up pretty well.

I just feel like Agalloch played it safe, which is something they've never really done.
