Transitions in ASOC aren't as good as Oct t/t

Not at all they're like 6 different songs just transitioned together
|
| |
I like how oct t/t has a certain melody that reprises throughout the song and ACOS is great, but it just doesn't have any edge of oct t/t

Yeah Octavarium has a great build-up and awesome transitions, but the musical quality of ACOS is still
better imo. ACOS was written during the I&W sessions, and to me it really reflects in the songwriting.
Octavarium has great musical themes and melodies but the ones in ACOS are just superior imo

Octavariums just works better as an epic lmo

The "medicate me" reprise at the solo of a Razors Edge just kills me every time

Yeah second half of t/t is top tier DT for sure
|
| |
Especially the final solo. My gosh, that is beautiful and epic, all without being the technical wank he does normally

Yeah it's so subtle and restrained, very not DT of them
|
| |
Rudess is also doing some fine work in the background too and it's so atmospheric and lush

idk the ambient intro of Octavarium annoys me, it's just too much of a pale Shine On imitation. The Someone Like Him/Medicate ballad in the middle is awesome, and the the really cool prog ending is excellent as well, but the whole thing is just not as authentic as ACOS to me. Still their second best epic tied with The Count of Tuscany imo

Finally Free and Learning to Live man.
Lyrics are also really good! Especially Portnoy's 'ode' to progressive music

I was talking about their 20-minute epics, I usually don't consider their 10-minute songs epics. And yeah the "Full Circle" part in Octavarium has great and fun lyrics
|

Portnoy and LaBrie's trade in the chorus of that is great and is actually kinda tense
|
| |
Octavarium wouldnt even make my top 10 DT songs honestly
