"We Are Destroyer" is another awesome opener for the band, but there really aren't too many songs on this album that have that same heaviness. That's why I think it's a lot like Dark Is the Way... which had some heavy songs like "To the Wolves", but a huge amount of underwhelming softer, ambient songs.

It's a solid album, but as the swan song for Anberlin, it should've been better.

I kinda dig the softer songs more.

@tommy
idk man, gave it my first listen today. with the scale i'm grading on i'd give the following releases as follows (my current ratings are too inflated tbh):
5 - cities
4.3 - vital
4.2 - ntfp
3.6 - ditw
3.4 - new surrender
3 - blueprints
it'd probably be around a 3.7. it has some pretty great songs and some meh songs. but that's one listen, hopefully it grows.
have you given it a listen yet?

Stephen Christian has always been a solid lyricist, even back in the days of Blueprints. Cities especially has some excellent poetry.

For me lyrics can make an album...even an artist. For instance, it's the main reason I like mewithoutYou so much.

i also think stephen can be a great lyricist, i really liked his work on miserabile visu and that was before i even understood the biblical allusion, and anchor & braille has some pretty great stuff. but he also has a tendency to write horribly cliched stuff ("there are songs i'll never write/ because of you walking out of my life" "you make breaking hearts look so easy" "boys speak in rhythm and girls speak in code doo doo doo doo...").
i'll listen carefully to the lyrics for this release though
"For me lyrics can make an album...even an artist."
i think that's fair. wish i could say the same, as it'd let me enjoy a lot of great music in genres i currently can't get into (mewithoutyou being one of them, actually... can't really stand their music)

unusual for an anberlin closer to do that
