There is something awfully cringey about the way Dylan sings on this record, like he is play-acting. Although the album tends to get on my nerves pretty soon (especially that duet with Cash, which at some point becomes almost ridiculous IMO), I have a weak spot for it nevertheless. I got the vinyl from my dad, who bought it when it came out. During the lockdowns my wife and I have been dancing to these tunes in the living room, and it remains tied to that period for us - which, despite everything, was also an intimate and quiet time for us.

I just don't understand how he was able to make his voice sound so wildly different for just one album

he took lessons from famously culturally insensitive ventriloquist Jeff Dunham

has to be one of my least fave records from him, although the sessions especially with Johnny Cash are remarkable, I have a boot of them but I know it is one of the bootleg series volumes now

I have also always been perplexed at how he was able to transform his voice so much on this album. I’ve listened to it so much that I hardly notice now, but it used to be hard for me to believe
