Y'know, people told me this was when Deftones abandoned nu-metal. When I first heard the album I was surprised because well the opening track was nu-metal

Well they didn't abandon it altogether, it's more like you can't call this as a whole nu metal. Digital Bath, Rx Queen, Teenager, Passenger and Pink Maggit sure as hell aren't nu metal but some other tracks on here are. They just decided to experiment here and holy fuck it paid off.
