Yeah, Cabinet and Incurso are pretty much the model for the "modern" sounding tech death production.

New Gorod is relatively good on this front too from what I've heard of it so far.

Nah I'm not the biggest fan either but I was having a search around for tech death albums that had reasonably decent mixing jobs, saw the new album and gave it a quick listen.

Or maybe I don't enjoy crappy tech death?

You can dislike this. That's fine. My response was purely geared towards one of the factually incorrect points you brought up and another one that dismissed the production.

Production can be highly subjective. When judging it in the way we are, production should be based on the merit for what it's trying accomplish. This is going for an extremely clean sound like others have mentioned. Although a good majority of the sound's soul is sacrificed, I believe this album's production supports the technical nature of this music incredibly well.

I myself studied studied in studios for two years and am still involved in the audio business. I'd like to think I have an ear for this stuff. I also know Rain City productions do a great job with their records. In Vancouver (Rain City Records & where I live) it's near impossible to get a steady stream of clients in this line of business if you're not good. This band have worked hard with Rain City to achieve the production they have on this record. Not only do I know that from reading band interviews, but I can hear it.

augury's second album is a great example of that clean but not brickwalled tech death production. probably my favorite modern tech death album too

Listening to this on HD650s right now. No clipping issues here the treble never has been an issue for me either.

While you're definitely right about the dynamic range but it's not something that goes against audio engineering standards. It's often something that's encouraged for producers now. As far as volume dynamics, I'd argue Incurso is not much better if at all.

I always used to get asked to limit and compress the crap out of stuff. It sucks yes, but bands and producers often want it. It's also one aspect of the production. In my opinion, it doesn't ruin everything unless it's really bad.

I still stand by my assessment of the production and love it.

if this sounds anything like their recent previous album then it's most likely potent ear fatigue. another one joins the jac/snox camp in this discussion..

Yeah it goes almost exactly like their previous record but sounds noticeably better IMO. If you didn't like the sound of their previous release though, you won't like this one.

I don't think you can join their side until you hear it for yourself though ;)

Perhaps not but when you know to a large extent what you're going to get you may as well not bother.

That's true. For you in particular, there is no reason to bother with this.

I dont even bother with most noodly tech death cuz i already know this band wrecks 95% of them. they're super chill dudes too.

Id really like to see them maintain the technically but murk up the production a bit. A cavernous osdm sound with music written like this would rule so hard.
