Just stopped by to reiterate that the coda of 'Substance' is stunning. It's made me cry several times. It's one of those sections of music that forces a person to stop everything he's doing and just listen for a few moments. I love this band so much.

the ocean broke me live. just what I wanted
|

i find it striking how much the vocalist sounds like the singer for Phoenix
spinning this now for the first time, about halfway through, I like it but I haven't been bowled over just yet.

...this album feels anticlimactic

one of the reasons it can be considered brilliant

saw them live a couple weeks ago and thought the new stuff sounded awesome. the end of Confidence got absolutely massive. and ya, these guys really can play their instruments.

explain
it's emotional tone is far more somber, but the punches come from small moments rather than big climaxes. example: a lyric like "quiet car rides/memories of/consenting adults" packs as much punch as any left-field climax they could throw at you on previous records, and its more stunning and rewarding for it.
