my sound-off had absolutely nothing to do with sexism or whatever. It was about the fact that, well, she looks like the opposite of what I consider to be kinky. That has nothing to do with her being a woman, just the fact that I think any person would look unflattering in that context.
i think i am going to have an aneurysm

Sorry Conrad =(
|

are we supposed to see that cover and assume that that's jenny hval herself? I know you could look it up, but that'd mean that we would have to care enough to do so, which I don't.

^ What?

Shall I ready my shield?

This is the most overly dramatic thread I've ever read
|
| |
yah this thread is friggin hilarious
people made the argument that the whole spiel about the summary spurred on good discussion. i disagree

And why is that? There's a good deal more involvement on here than half the reviews that the site receives (in where comments tend to be more along the lines of "lol LP" or "fag" - sometimes even in the same sentence).
|
| |
because it's really pedantic and tangential. i know about the themes of the album but i see no reason to scold you for what was obviously you picking out a dumb soundoff for shits and giggles. obviously it wasn't contrived, and obviously this is more of a surface review for a quick glance at what this is like, not some crazy in-depth research paper (still a great piece of writing though). and the apologies just seem over the top, comes across as really disingenuous to me, but who am i to say whether they're genuine or not

I guess everyone's just disappointed that this review wasn't what it could have been, and I'm taking that as a positive sign. I feel that people caring enough (at least, it seems like they care) to spend 2-3 pages fighting over the quality of the review is pretty overwhelming, and I'd take that over a week-long feature any day.
Also I've been inspired to write better now so hurray!!
|
| |
It's great that you take that from this discussion, Irving.
|
| |
well for starters, they critiziced the review in about 5 posts and then they got stupid and started bitchin about a meaningless sound-off and then the apologizes and damn
|
| |
"Also I've been inspired to write better now so hurray!!"
Then this thread has proved important. Let's toast to that
|
| |
sure, you're allowed to feel passionate or whatever, and you can be adamant in your position, but i don't see how your overreactions and going off on the tangents are justified by your love of the album. silly thread.
anyway, jenny hval rules, let's discuss that

really good thread, nice to see that level of discussion on sputnik again
to the people that are calling it "ridiculous" or "dramatic", go back to posting "yea" or "pos" on
dozens of threads a day
Personally, I didn't take much deeper meaning from this album, but that's because this type of music
usually requires a lot of consciously intense "active" listening (for me to enjoy). I think a lot
of people approached it in this way, and that's fine, but it's also nice to read thoughtful posts
from lewis/robin etc. There's a lot to be discussed here. It's too bad that I can only be an
observer in this instance, but I enjoyed the discussion regardless. If nothing else, it has
convinced me to try this album again and attempt to take more from it as a piece of art, paying
attention to the true intentions of the lyrics. Unless you guys are completely full of shit, then it
seems like I've missed quite a lot of interesting commentary on this album.
Good stuff guys, love you always. uncrew >>>
ps the soundoff is silly and (unintentionally) sexist, but I hope we all know that Jacob wasn't
trying to be a dolt
|
| |
Also Deviant, come on man, you too?
I'm just pot stirring, don't worry!
|
| |
I don't get how it was sexist =[

It is still a distinct possibility.

because saying something "isn't kinky" has the implication that it's the "opposite of sexy" which is something we probably wouldn't be discussing if it was a male on the cover. woman are always expected to look pristine, so when they don't, people think that this somehow warrants a special comment.
I realize you didn't intend this but yeah it's kind of subversive and demeaning.
I'm not all fussed about it (just for the record), I just think it's an interesting point of discussion. The way that the male-dominated "music critique" culture approaches art made by females is troubling to say the least.

This just reminds me when RA went into full testosterone meltdown over Nina Kraviz taking a bath
