it ok
prefer this and The Egg though, without question. Starless will probably be the next Shiner album I re-visit though. I absolutely wore out their discography upon discovering them these past 5 months but it was probably 70%+ Lula Divinia and The Egg, ~30% everything else

Sideways into Pinned is a revelation man

Sideways/Pinned is so ethereal and great, but a lot of the rest is a bit too byzantinely post-hardcore to me. I'll give it another whirl, these kinds of albums tend to grow for me.

very interesting description, I also feel like there's somethin off with this intuitively, like I can't sit through the entire thing without being slightly perturbed by somethin I can put my finger on
but yea some of these songs, especially sideways/pinned, are fantastic

to me this album/band is one of a kind, but when you say "these kinds of albums" what do you have in mind? @kkarron
i mean they remind me of Tool / APC in some ways but I don't know if that's necessarily stylistically. it's probably at least somewhat just that those two bands + Shiner make up my favorite bands lol

I mean like this slightly mathier post-hardcore stuff that doesn't have an instant hook to draw you in, I guess Fugazi is an example that quickly comes to mind on this site. But yeah, it is rather unique.

I actually liked The Egg at first listen a bit more than this so I'm sure this will click at some point too.

After making my comment, I listened to a random podcast review of this album (called Dig Me Out) and they actually mentioned Tool as a band they think is similar
Any particular Fugazi albums / eras? Haven't been able to get into them much

Their first (13 Songs) and last (The Argument) are my favorites

The Argument is defo something. As for similar stuff to this, Hum and Jawbox scratch the itch every now and then. I take it people who like this like Deftones too (not me though).

Jawbox S/T is underrated and def similar to this. Slip by Quicksand is another too

Yeah, Special Sweetheart/Downward Is Heavenward/Slip/Meantime and I guess maybe Repetition and Red Medicine would be my nakama for this

Wew, some of this stuff by Castor is scratching the itch
Vocals are really good, maybe particularly in their lone LP, sounds kinda similar to Allen Epley (Shiner's frontman) and they make use of a lot of time signature changes and etc.
edit: wait apparently AE has vocal credits on this album lmao. Not sure which tracks exactly tho, not yet anyway

Am enjoying that my favs on this have shifted almost completely since I first heard it. Sequencing here is absolutely fantastic, probably one of the tightest flowing albums I can think of and I love love love how it reprises small parts of itself. A lost of the major alt metal bands are stale af in the melody dept and bleach me out if I hear more than a couple of songs, but this is so much smarter with its motifs without necessarily being "more melodic" or whatev. Might bump
