My only experience with doom is candlemass and I love their first 4 but idk this album isn't doing much of anything for me. Sitting at a very light 3 after one spin. I did really like the track Soul Sacrifice though

(I know this is the whole point of doom but) it's just way too slow for me without having enough tasty riffs to make that not matter. That and the vocals are a bit ehhhh. But I will absolutely be giving this more chances at some point to see if it grows on me

it is slow but it is also progressive (as progressive as a doom metal album can be), and that progressiveness (along with many other little things) is what makes it stand out, imo

Undoubtedly one of the greatest bands in metal, however, they represent only a small fraction of the genre. If you want to explore this side of doom metal, check out these bands:



Solitude Aeturnus

Solstice

Isole (their second album is very much candlemass-esque)

Scald

Sorcerer

All of the above bands play the same style of music, more or less. One of the things a band must be measured by is their sound. How unique and original it is. In that sense, Candlemass is a great band. Trying to find a band that sounds exactly as the Swedes (or as good), shouldn't be advised. You will always find small differences, therefore you should listen only to the real thing.



In short, try to be a little bit more open-minded about this whole thing. And give Cathedral another shot. They deserve it.

If again their debut won't do the trick then I'm sure you will find something to love in their subsequent work.



Just don't approach them thinking you found Candlemass no.2. They are a completely different world.

@rock after peeping your review and spinning this again, it really clicked. I'm gonna go with a 4 for now but I can definitely see that potentially going up with repeated listens. My only major gripe yet is the vocals. It's not consistently irritating, but is still much more frequent than I would like. Several times per track. Soul Sacrifice is still probably my favorite track off this, though, I do really enjoy each track now

The coolest thing about this record is that it was released in 1991 when speed was the name of the game.

I love The Ethereal Mirror, so I should find something here that I like

This really accentuates the doom. Brooding vibes, especially compared to the stuff that came around with Ethereal Mirror.
