Greatest story is still my fav tho. Both chris and brendan’s strongest songwriting on that record (especially brendan’s like jfc all his songs on that thing are like their best material hands down)

tbh calcutta is my fave just becuz i have ascertained a kinda narrative flow with this one that i havent picked up on in greatest story. not to say that there isnt one in greatest story (if there isnt thatd be ironic dontcha think); i should really give it some more front to back playthrus to see if i can figure that one out. still like you say the songwriting is unbelievable. moments like "i should be on trial for everything i havent done"; "if you could brave this feeeeeeling / at night it would whisper to me"; the whole of "wishful puppeteer"...fuuuuuuck my jaw drops every time. also goddamn so many of the lines on this record are fucking poetry. its like with jane doe; some of the writing is just so far beyond anything else the band has ever done that its like it wasnt even made by the same band.
tbh im not rlly feelin brendans parts on greatest story as much as chris'. what r ur highlights from that department? im curious becuz that feelin as well as my thing about the albums flow has me thinkin i dont rlly know greatest story that well.

The lawrence arms a band that ive listened to a lot that haven’t really dug much into the lyrical content very much, but from what ive picked up chris’s songs seem to carry more of a narrative where brendan’s are just 1 and a half minute barnburners basically.
March of the elephants, alert the audience, on with the show and hesitation station are my favorites on greatest story

Okay so I’ve finally gotten through all these albums and Oh Calcutta! is my favorite. It feels so much more sincere, and has a sense of “don’t give a fuck...okay, maybe a little” and is so raw but perfectly constructed too. Yep, this one gets my number 1 spot.

i really dig it. i know they get compared to alk3 a lot for obvious reasons, but this is probably their most trio-esque song ever.
