gonna let this album sit for a while and look back in october sometime. wouldn't be surprised if it grew on me a bit but compared to how much i was moved by the debut, i can't see it getting that much better

even though this was a let down i'm still considering seeing them tomorrow night. should be a good show, right? plus I'm still gutted about missing them at Sasquatch 2010.

they seem great live

The setlist they played at Bestival was heavy on material from xx. You might even find that the new material clicks when you hear it live. Win win situation really.

yeah that's what I'm thinking. I love the song "Angels" and they'll obviously play that. plus, gotta see "Intro" and "VCR" live.

James Blake dwells in the same sonic area, but I don't think the two bands are easily comparable, sure aspects are, but as an original entity, not really.

xx created an amazing and unique sound in 2009. the only qualm with that album that i have is that it all started sounding a bit similar, but because it was so unique, so intimate and so awesome it didn't matter.
here, the sound is neither unique nor intimate imo =/

might have to bump this up to a 4.5. also come to the realization that Swept Away is the best individual track they've ever released. granted, this is hardly an album where individual tracks matter, but still. >dem drum crashes

that repitition. that apathy. that beat that once again doesn't fit.
it's ok though - maybe you'll pass the next test i give you

that repitition.
it's no less repetitious than anything on either of their albums.
that apathy.
ap·a·thy
[ap-uh-thee] Show IPA
noun, plural ap·a·thies.
1.
absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement.
if you were expecting "excitement" when listening to the xx, i think you may be listening to the wrong band.
that beat that once again doesn't fit.
i fail to see how. hell, the beat MAKES that song. the beats overall define this album.

first album had soooo many passionate back and forths. i really missed them on this one.
also, jamie's beat, while quite nice, doesn't fit well with oliver's voice. throughout this lp, he showcases his own talents (and he
is a very talented musician), but he is doing so at the expense of what's right for the band. the xx should not have gone in a
direction where the beat, and not the singers, defines the album.

for the record, i never listened to the xx for the emotion. i listened for the atmosphere, although emotionally this definitely resonates with me much more than the first album.
