Revisiting most of his albums and trying the three I've missed.



So far:



Odelay - still good

Mutations - still good and my fave Beck

Mellow Gold - a few good songs, as average as I remembered otherwise

Midnite Vultures - worse than remembered, more derivative than remembered, really weak song writing on at least half the songs

Def had to drop this a .5 to a 2 out of 5 - it reminds me of the Empire of the Sun debut now...only (eek) weaker

Sexx Crimes, Nicotine & gravy, Hollywood Freaks and Milk & Honey



Beautiful Way and Get Real Paid are 0.5/5 dross for me, unlistenable garb

This being so excrutiating a listen was the big surprise - was anticipating maybe upping my rating a .5 not dropping it



Honestly it was more painful a listen than Mellow Gold and I never predicted that as I know and have much experience of being bored by Mellow Gold



I did try half of 'Sea Change' and that seemed even more insincere and dull than remembered



Odelay and Mutations are solid though, he definitely had it for a while

I'm not sure I go to Beck for sincerity. That he hides from himself is part of his appeal. Anyway, this album screams plastic product--he went for it, and he delivered, and it's perfect for what it is, and that might limit its appeal, no doubt. But I dig it.
