steve was gettin pushed out more and more tho, he does have amazing moments on this tho but as a whole, it aint up there with the classix

yea dude a lot of hacketts tunes were denied so he had to release it on his solo shit, dno why you'd not make the most of one of the best lead players ever

There are two big issues with this album. First are the vocals. Exit charismatic front-man Gabriel and enter humdrum Phil Collins on vocal duties. Gabriel was innovative, a great lyricist, and superb vocalist. Phil has his moments, but can't hold a candle to Peter.

The real downside to this album is that Steve Hackett is not is used to his full potential. Ripples is Hackett's only decent lead on the album and it's blended in with Tony Banks keys. There are no memorable guitar parts like Firth of Fifth, The Lamia, The Fountain of Salmacis, or Supper's Ready. Hackett's compositions were being ignored and he was being pushed out. If the guitar had more room to shine it would make this a better album.

Dance on a volcano is an excellent opener but there are some faults. First off I'll say that Phil actually gives a solid vocal performance, whereas every other song he fails to dramatize like Gabriel. The song has nice dynamics and energy with Banks, Rutherford, and Hackett killing it during the instrumental bit. Phil also shows off his drumming prowess all over the track. Now one problem with this song is that the lyrics are nowhere as good as they used to be - that actually goes for all the songs on the album. The second problem is Hackett is basically fighting with Tony's keyboards toward the end of the song.

Entangled is a solid acoustic ballad filled with 12-string guitars, nice harmonies, and a dramatic keyboard outro.

Squonk seems to get a lot of praise for being one of the 'heavier' songs off the album. Really though the song is a straightforward and simple rock song with cliche lyrics that plods on. The only highlights for me are Phil's vocals and drumming.

Mad Man Moon is the first bump in the road. Penned by Banks, it's a piano driven ballad that is way too long. Phil's tame vocals make the song even more boring. If 3 minutes were cut and Hackett had a solo it could have been better.

Robbery, Assault And Battery is comically awful. The pop influences are very song, despite underlying prog textures. Terrible track besides the guitar, bass, and mellotron interlude. Phil's vocals on this song are just irritating.

Ripples has some nice melodies and has one of Collins' better vocal performances. Hackett has a decent lead but once again it's buried under Tony Banks.

Title track is more pop than prog. Another stinker.

Los Endos is the instrumental album closer. It uses melodies from previous tracks and works well.
