the review is pretty great but again but I disagree with the intro somewhat. You don't need to look at any other album to realize how much of a failure this album is. Its not only bad because it's not what 'it was supposed to be'. It's bad because his songwriting his horrendous, the songs are awkward and the whole album is incredibly underwhelming and sometimes annoying.

You don't need to, but it really helps to understand why Bemis sounds so try-hard and awkward on this record. His music has always walked a tightrope, so it helps to understand why sometimes it was brilliant in order to appreciate what happened for it to fall so dramatically in quality here.

Thats definitely true. I honestly don't even believe that he tried to make this sound like ...Is A Real Boy though. They are nothing alike stylistically. Not even close. Huge misfire for him. He always tries so hard with every album, I mean he did that 10 fold on Is A Real Boy and made a nearly flawless, masterpiece of a record. And then like 8 years later he made this. Im hoping he'll get inspiration and write something great again.

Was really hoping this would be good. Good review, though. Now I'm bummed.

yeah this is one of chan's better reviews. i would've loved some specific examples of whats so shitty about "admit it again", but otherwise this was a great read

It's just awfully conceived from start to finish. It paints Bemis as unrelatable more than any other song on here. Just as you've gotten used to the idea that it's going to be a sub-par version of Admit It!!! with a few cool lines (the Rihanna one had a bit of wit about it at least) it turns into the same crap as the rest of the record.

I've been listening to their self titled recently, really liking it, and i've always loved IARB. Is it worth getting 'In Defence of the Genre'?

Whilst this one is getting slated, i'll give it a listen when it's released. I'm a sucker for Bemis' vocals, even if his lyrics can be completely meaningless.

Not even sure it's a good idea to "give it a try". I know obviously there's the small chance you might actually enjoy it but in another thread someone said in response to a comment about "Admit It Again" that "at least we still have the original!"

I'm not sure I do. Maybe that makes me a dick but hey.

Great review, skimmed through the record because it couldn't really hold my interest. I don't think him having to write those songs for song shop has really helped him, he just seems tired. As harsh as it sounds (and as little as I know about him), I can't see Max writing a great album unless he has a kid, gets divorced, or some other major event takes place in his life.

What's with all these indie-rock/pop-punk bands getting old and making shitty alt rock. C'maaahn.

That's how I went through the discography, first IARB and WARB, then the self-titled, then baseball, and finally In Defense of the Genre, and I love all those albums now. In Defense weirded me out the first few times I heard it so I ignored it for a year.

Bemis needs to divorce Eisley chick so he doesn't ruin them, and start smoking weed and fornicating again.
