love that melody. this guy sure knows how to hook the listener with an opening lyric. like fuck, how could anyone stop listening to master's thesis or heart of the continent after the opening melody?

seeing live tonight. pretty stoked.

I agree with wonarabbit. I always find myself skipping to certain songs on Weakerthans albums, and I think this is more consistent than the Weakerthans albums but with fewer obvious standouts. I'd put "Heart of the Continent" up against almost any 'thans song, though. Love, love, love that line "Just another door that won't open for me anymore" and the delivery of it.
The "Highway 1" songs are fantastic bookends. Also love the sneaky link between "When I Write My Master's Thesis" and "Letter In Icelandic &c."

i should add that john was amazing live last week. the tunes sounded awesome in concert. double encore. played a couple weakerthan songs (night windows, tournament of hearts) and a jawbreaker cover (boat dreams from the hill). and the ottawa crowd was unexpectedly rowdy too - awesome night.

Saw John live tonight. I handed him my tallboy to raise a toast during 'Elegy for Gump Worsley', he
took a sip after. It was awesome.

love this so much, maybe my favourite of the year. so unassuming and unadorned, yet filled with so many huge, touching moments. but then that's samson.

@Johnnyblaze I was at the Ottawa show too. You forgot to mention he played two Propagandhi songs. Picked up his bass and started playing Gift and Anchorless. Played way more than 2 weakerthans songs. Actually half the setlist was made up of Weakerthans songs. It was pretty amazing! And the Ottawa crowd was in rare form.

I actually saw Frank Turner last night with Joel Plaskett at the Bronson Centre. Really awesome show.

as did i. i was up at the front for frank and took a seat halfway through joel's set. both put on a great show.
fuck the bronson centre though, that place sucks. i would've much preferred that show to be at mavericks, ritual, or zaphods.
|
| |
I didn't go cause of the bronson centre. Also it was expensive as fuck for not liking Joel

ya joel could be better - he has a couple great tracks. i find that when he stays away from boring jam sessions and quirky shit the dude can write an amazing song (rollin rollin rollin, you're mine, nowhere with you), he just needs to keep his sound more focussed.

i'm going to listen to this all day because it's perfect

well it's a nice album but gets dull sometimes

I feel like a lot of soothing music tends to run dull if you try to listen to it on repeat.
Plus, sometimes it just doesn't fit the mood. This is excellent cloudy weekend morning coffee-sipping music though.
