Alright, Alright. This review and the following comments have convinced me to give this another listen or two. We'll see what happens.

It doesn't take long for this record to sink in, but it FUCKING SUCKS on first listen.

Didn't suck on my first listen. I liked the sonic tone of it (the production, his warbling voice, etc.). I heard it knowing how much hype it got on Sputnik, so I took some time to really listen to it, and...well, it was pretty average. It wasn't until my next few listens that parts started getting stuck in my head, like the main riff to the title track, or just the lyric, "Ooooooh, coooooomelyyyyyy..." And I found myself singing along with those songs.
And now I have the record on vinyl, and it's amazing, and an easy 4.5.

Yeah I definitely like it more that I remember... I'm still not understanding how people can stand the vocals in some places though.

My first encounter with the record was the same, thought it was an awfully produced mess and stuff. But although it's not a 5 for me now, I like it really really much.

I follow what I gather is quite an unusual trajectory for this album: loved it the first couple of times, then it grew off me significantly and now i just think 'ho-hum I wonder what Phil Elverum is up to' when I get the urge to listen to this brand of music. I just find the whole album really tepid.
That being said I've been wrong about albums before, maybe one day i'll see the brilliance in this that near-everyone does
