It's rather obvious that the reviewer wrote this with a bias

And all that the commas thing means is that some of the sentences are long and meandering with a lot of clutter.

TOO MANY COMMAS

You're fishing. So what if he did, anyways? You 1'd Brokencyde. I'm sure if you read a Brokencyde 1
review, you'd pos it. I'm sure said review would also be inherently biased against Brokencyde in the
first place, but that doesn't make the rating any less justified. (Sorry YetAnotherBrick for hijacking
your thread like it's mine; it's always been a pet peeve how people neg reviews because they disagree
with the rating.) And please, if he didn't have long sentences, you'd complain about how A) it's too
choppy or B) there's not enough content.

Dude, be my guest. I hate it when people do that, too. I actually appreciate what you're doing haha

"Fans of the band, some old, some new, praised last year’s Zombie EP for supposedly eradicating these habits, habits like those awful, invasive keyboard passages, and those notoriously uninspired breakdowns"
/clusterfuck
And xtoxin, if you think this is sophisticated writing then you need to read something other than Maxim

And I didn't neg because of the rating asshole. I have some of their albums at a 2 if you want to stare at my ratings chart looking for examples of my bias.

I don't see how that sentence is a clusterfuck at all. Cluttered sentences aren't cluttered simply because of the amount of commas in the sentence, it has a lot more to do with the words being used.

With their latest offering, Dead Throne, The Devil Wears Prada has officially traded being frustratingly awful for being frustratingly average. Yes, it is technically an improvement, but hardly a significant one.
Problem? The second sentence has two commas and like twelve words (not bother to count), yet it flows perfectly fine. Even then, the commas in the sentence you used, while redundant at times, give him his voice.
The only place that's awkward is "some old, some new" (sort of redundant), and then there's the comma before "and those..." that shouldn't even be there. There is far, far worse that you have pos'ed, I guarantee.

In the sentence I cited, the commas are used because he jumps from topic to topic and therefore the sentence loses significance. In the one you cited, they're there because that's where commas are supposed to go. Big difference.
|

Yes, but they're from the same review. You just admitted the review is fine at spots (hell 98% of it, the sentence you're pointing at isn't even that bad).
What I don't understand is why you didn't say, "Well this review could be better if you fixed your first sentence" instead of just neg'ing it. Unless you can find other places where his writing is messed up. And on another note, you just admitted it wasn't the comma use but his jumping from place to place that resulted in the neg, so stop citing comma usage as a negative.

The comma usage is the causation of this problem. And that sample sentence is from the summary just saying.
All I was trying to say is that I don't believe that the review is well written because of its excessive comma usage, sentence clutter and, to a lesser extent, reviewer bias but I guess it all got blown out of proportion because I used statistics to back up my argument. Feel free to go neg the shit out of my reviews and justify it by saying "you put a period where an exclamation point should go" just to piss me off. I don't even give a fuck. At least I tried to help somebody improve.

Why would I put any merit into your advice when you seem to be the only one that gives a fuck about my "excessive comma usage"?
|
| |
Dude I'm not retarded lol. Why would I neg your reviews? lol it's not like I'm pissed at you or something.
I'm just saying, you ended up providing one sentence of evidence for what you're saying. It didn't feel like you really had valid criticism, especially when you consider this is better writing for the site. The actual content was pretty good (I don't know the band or genre so I can't evaluate reviewer bias), and the actual prose was solid or even good. Even if there are a few comma issues or sentence clutter issues, that doesn't really justify a neg still.
|
| |
This is a good review and doesn't deserve to be neg'd. My word is law. So let it be written, so let it be done.
|
| |
Review is well-written imo. It got its points across well, told me what to expect if I was interested in this (I'm not), and there might be a lot of commas but I don't see that as an issue. I pos'd.

I haven't read it but you've got fair points each of your own. FromDaHood's sample sentence is true to being a little messy as a sentence but it's not a poorly written sentence at all - just the grammar's a bit awkward.
It's absolutely not worth a neg by that alone though, hell no. I'll read the review later but I've got a 5am shift tomorrow, so... definitely not tonight.
