You're talking about the stars somewhere in your huge, spacious, deep negative review. Good coincidence! Also, very good one, dude. A bit long to read for the french speaker I am, but I can live with that. Long live Google translator.

Good Review. And I agree with most of it, though I think the Rating may be a little bit to harsh on Matthew... but this is definitely his weakest effort by far, compared to Avalanche or Hospital Music it really sucks balls.

You're probably right AutoRock. For any other musician this would probably have been a 3.0 at least; unfortunately I simply know that Good could have done much better. For what it's worth this album did grow on me slightly though. I could rate this a 2.5 and not be thoroughly bugged about it.

One further observation: the songs, when listened to individually, are ok - but when packaged together in an album, they thoroughly suck. This album is worth much less than the sum of its parts.

Okay. So this album has just started to grow on me hardcore. And not a 2.0 -> 2.5 kinda grow, but more like a 2.0 -> 4.0.
Damn it.

You should have known better than to give an album a bad rating. It's like using reverse psychology on yourself.

As I recall you have this problem too, Sowing. It's annoying as hell, isn't it? Each time I rate an album as bad, it starts to grow on me. The process is particularly accelerated if I have reviewed it =.="

Yeah...I think it is because reviewing it forces you to give it multiple listens. Then it grows on you, and you start to appreciate it more than you initially did.

That's so true. Wargh. This reviewing business is a bitch, isn't it?
Also, I wanted to ask you this: do you find that you enjoy music less after you started reviewing? That you always seemed to find that you had too much to listen to? And as a result ended up rushing through the whole thing every now and then?

it's complicated. i like more music than i used to, and i have discovered almost all of my current favorites by getting into reviewing. but at the same time, i do feel like my appreciation for the albums that i do like has dwindled. i used to be able to listen to an album for months, maybe even years if i liked it...even if it wasn't really that good. now i digest an album and have to move on. there are a few exceptions, but for the most part unless itunes is on shuffle, i leave a lot of the music i review behind. even the stuff i rate highly. i dunno its a sickness...

THIS. SO MUCH THIS.
I can't tell you how much I miss being able to stick around one single album for up to weeks/months on end. Moreover, I feel that my attention span has dropped off catastrophically too. It's hard to describe - I sort of get bored with an album within the first two listens, but if I somehow manage to return to it again (a VERY BIG "if"), I'll start wishing I had treasured it while it was still fresh off the shelf.
That being said, I love reviewing a lot. I like sharing my thoughts with an audience, and that it allows me to appreciate an album in a more finite space of time - under tighter circumstances, if you will. Oh well, it's so hard to describe.
=/?
I also don't understand how people can rate 5-6 albums a day. Like, HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT?! (Deviant I'm looking at you.) I feel that even one a day (my average) is uber fast lol o.O

I've recently heard an experienced sports journalist stating he doesn't perceive/enjoy a sport game like an entertainment since his debut as a journalist (business as usual). Also, he has no favorite team in any sport anymore. Actually, his favorite teams are always the ones that feed him to write a big deal of fresh articles.
Devenir journaliste, c'est s'exposer à ce risque.

"I also don't understand how people can rate 5-6 albums a day"
For me, after I've listened to an album I almost always know exactly what I thought about it. I guess for some people it takes more time to process.

I always know exactly how I feel about an album after 1 listen as well.
Until my 2nd listen, that is.

The moral of the story - Stop reviewing, and enjoy music thoroughly instead.

But I like reviewing and having an audience to share my thoughts with =( And it's a cool way of making someone fund my collector's habit and musical appetite =(
