1. I'm very inebriated

2. I drink too much

3. I think I comitted several faux pas' throughout the course of the evening

4. This is an absolutely astounding album and you should all listen to it accordingly

so i've been ruminating

this + Mark Hollis' s/t = laughing stock

by which i mean this is the album Mark Hollis' sequel to laughing stock could have (and perhaps should have) sounded like

i can offer no higher recommendation than that

interesting! i listened to it in the wrong order the first time - music44stringedinstruments, then improvisation, then ACEGHD (i was browsing youtube) and i think that was the best way to hear it for the first time actually. Before Aceghd came on i thought it was pretty cool onkyo but nothing more and then the strings came in and quite honestly my jaw dropped. that moment was indescribably affecting and it really elucidated/opened up the entire album - idk i felt like i got it

now, for what it's worth, Improvisation is my favourite - but Aceghd is definitely the way in, the one you can latch onto for security before the ride gets too bumpy.

i guess what i'm trying to say is keep trying brah xx

yes!!

Kinoshita's violin clicks/creaks/pops on Improvisation are the best. If you want more of this listen to his solo album Segments... which is also one of the more extremely minimal and hair-raising onkyo albums... the first track is essentially silence (i have listened to this and heard or perhaps imagined a couple of notes played. i have read reviews saying that there are one or two notes played. looking at the waveform under an audio editor and maximizing the volume, you will see that it is in fact a recording and you see only a few sounds in it that are like thumps and a car passing by, sounds that do not come from the violin itself) but then the next two tracks are (slightly) more active. I'd possibly rate this album a 4.5 if it weren't for the first track tbh. But when I first listened to this album I thought it was about a 1 or 1.5.

Chamber Music Concerts vol. 1 (with Taku Sugimoto, Masahiko Okura and Taku Unami) is also very good onkyo very similar in style to Quartet: a few of the pieces on this album are in fact as good as Quartet. I wonder will there be a volume 2?

'Kinoshita's violin clicks/creaks/pops on Improvisation are the best'

oh man yes! I love that crystal-clear guitar-note that pops up at the 10 minute mark too and the way it hangs there in the shuffling space languorously, it's just such a perfect interaction idk it resonates so much

also thank you for the recs Claudio! It's interesting but usually i loathe a lot of onkyo musicians solo output (especially Sachiko M and Taku Sugimoto (who is a talented guitarist but extremely limited in what he chooses to play) but when they combine the upshots are incredible (see also: Good Morning Good Night). Gonna check Chamber Music Concerts post-haste too btw
