the lyrics are definitely what make dear science compelling for me, but idk, isn't it nice having songs similar to "crying" that are free of that? i just think this is how tvotr should reunite. dear science and return to cookie mountain are draining as fuck, this isn't.
but you know, we both love it, so what am i even debating?

bullshit. I don't believe that for a second.
I bet you're working on it right now.
and we're not debating as much as discussing; but aren't they the same thing most of the time?
and yes I agree: going the route of more 60s era Soul/Pop (at least lyrically) certainly pays off for this band. I just understand how some feel dejected as Tunde and Kyp's persona(s) are less personal (at least on the surface) with Nine Types of Light.
tbh Desperate Youth is the only record of theirs I find taxing.
Save maybe the last like 4 mins of "Wash The Day Away" should I be trying to sleep.

really I would love to just see these guys live so I can stop over-contextualizing this fucking album

well, i mean return to cookie mountain is musically a very cryptic album for me. and people can debate whether dear science's lyrics are good or terrible, but i think they're briliant in that same cryptic way. and that's why i think i remember disliking dear science when really i just found it compelling in a different way from 'return'.
but this feels like having dear science with that part of the band taken away, and i can totally understand how that works for them after making records like that. it must be really explosive create music that way, and while i don't believe for a second they'll make another album that people will think of in the way they do this one, ("flat") without it i know i'd feel there was somehing missing from the band. this isn't a transitional one or whatever for me, just the one they needed to make, i reckon.
also i love it and stuff.

as I said to Inveigh: TVoTR phoning-it-in is still better than like 80% of everyone else firing on all cylinders.
again I agree. This reads like a palette cleanser--and at least they worked out the kinks without crafting a boring record (erm KoL)

a 5.0 pallete cleanser!

I really can't wait till some other reviews get posted for this album. because there are a lot of angles I didn't explore in this review, and on the other side of things, you could really make quite a smashing negative review of this as well. Going to be some quality reading.
I really find this album to be their easiest to listen to by far.
Thanks lance!
