At least try to understand it smaugman. There's more to music than just melody, even texture, and there's more meaning than conventional lyrics can express. A few years ago you would have probably called prog "fucked and annoying", you know.

Soft Machine is totally different from this whether we're talking about the early two psychedelic ("dada") albums, the next avant/groove-less jazz-fusion three, or the later groove-heavy jazz-fusion ones. Quality-wise Third is not far from this, but stylistically it's a different beast.
I think the fact that there are no vox on any Soft Machine record since Third (on which they appear on only one of the four tracks) speaks for itself.
