How?

I mean, you wouldn't call Mr. Bungle progressive rock.

So when exactly can you say a band is being progressive, if you can't use it in the normal genre definition or when they are, you know, progressing?

When you say progressive, 99% of people are going to assume that you mean genre and sound wise. Progression is something that is viewed overtime and not necessarily within a single album or song. I like to use the word evolution when it comes to a band changing overtime.

eternium has a good point. but to avoid confusion you should just use the phrase 'the band is progressing' as oppsoed to 'they are progressive'

So.. then Black Sabbath, Chuck Berry, Slayer, Mayhem, and Run DMC are all progressive.

Using your definition.

...Deftones did that. This whole thing started from you saying Deftones weren't progressive. By your own definition they are.

Eventually you're going to admit that your argument is weak and your definition is way off.

Porcupine Tree is definitely a progressive rock band.

Are you trolling?

What other alt metal band goes from bouncing riffs with insane screaming and robotic vocals (Elite) to soft crooning over a sad acoustic guitar and trip hop beats (Teenager) within the same album?

"anotherbrick, you continue to bring up bands that have to contention the the current."

what??

when i brought up butterfly effect and those other bands i was talking to the other dude,

i brought up PT because they are clearly a progressive band but they haven't done anything "new" for music, so by your definition they aren't a progressive band

I've never heard another album that sounds anything like this one. Nothing reminds me of this album. That suggests its completely new and different.

i always thought prog meant a simple idea that's been expanded upon by an artist to the point where it's been disguised.

What bands incorporated the same influences/sounds as Deftones and had a similar range in sound?

Well, Mr. Bungle doesn't really have its sound, as its sound is the fact that just about every song is

a completely different genre. Deftones still have a central sound that they have.

Besides, like I said before, Mr. Bungle isn't progressive. They're avant-garde.
