I listened to Universal again last night and realized how fucking horrible this band has become.

Yep. Truer words have never been spoken (except for that one time you called me sexy).
Anyway, read Hawks' Malsain review and listen to that. I rec'd it to him and he wrote a review on it and now we pass that wisdom to you.

never listened to this band. do they try and copy emperor or dissection, or are they by chance actually an original bm band?

They don't copy either of those bands. They're fairly unique.

You might as well start with this one. And yeah they don't sound anything like Emperor or Dissection at all.

Vortex does both the growls and clean vocals well on this album. Very nice.
"When the oceans rise, and thunder calls, the shape of the substance in furious manners falls, where the oceans riiiiiiiiiiiiiiise."
I've always admired the bass lines on Oceans Rise. Pretty good I think.

This is definitely his best performance with this band.

Hmm, yes, I agree with that. I think Vortex sounds the best when his voice is not overused. For example in Dimmu Borgir his voice worked perfectly. One of my favorite voices in metal. Ridiculously good in live situation as well.

Excellent album, and perfects the first trio of Borknagar albums, proving to be just as vital as the band's self titled and "The olden domain". Here we have much more atmospheric and epic material than ever before, and for that reason, it works very nicely indeed. The clean vocals seem to have taken on more of a prominent approach, particularly in songs such as 'Universal', 'The witching hour' and 'Nocturnal vision', though the harsher style is still there to make sure the band don't wander too far from their BM roots. My personal highlights are 'Universal' which has a grandiose sweep throughout and the somewhat progressive 'Ad Noctum', which features a suitable use of symphonic material. My only problem here is that sometimes the clean vocals sound a little shaky and weak, but only when compared to the harsher style.
