hmm, for me these guys are like "this is pretty cool and unique". but i don't really have that "i want to listen to them" feeling, ever. probably just me, cause i do think they're really cool.

thank you, the older stuff is more up my street. the voice is still grating though unfortunately. I could listen to it for a while.

I absolutely love his voice. It's so unique and expressive.

This album is pretty good but it also bums me out that they've totally ditched their math rock element. The new Tera Melos isn't really mathy at all either, but it's at least as weird as anything else they've made. This album - the extra instruments and the production and the whole new vibe - just kind of feels like they're intentionally trying to appeal to Pitchfork and other indie publications. I never would have compared this band to Grizzly Bear or Vampire Weekend two years ago but now they're right up that alley. And that's not a criticism to those two bands, but it just isn't the same M&A. And if you've listened to Bird Barnyard it's an even further step away from what they used to sound like. I guess all of their changes just lead me to think that they don't really care that much about their style of music.
Their show with Nurses was still one of the best shows I've been to, though. I'll be glad if this album is successful, Dave Davison is a super nice guy and the rest of them seem to be too, and they're all great musicians.

something tells me they'll bring some mathiness back to their music in the future, i liked Y&M&TM so much because it blended technicality and pop so well. although lately i've been digging TSH the most

Fuck you sputnik and your crappy user averages. I mean, a 3.5? COME ON.
And I honestly don't see why everyone is finding it so difficult to get into Davison's vocals. They're a little different from your standard smooth indie affair, but there's no awkward screams, no death growls, no pitchy notes, no nasally timbre; they sound pretty damn great from where I'm standing. He's improved two-fold since You & Me & the Mountain.

i try not to understand the thought process of everyone. if i made an effort to I'd end up too pissed
off and confused.

It's just weird, because I would have considered this a strong contender for album of the year purely due to its accessibility and subtle technicality. The complaints I'm seeing here though are either "I can't get into his voice" or "I liked them when they were mathy".

I'd go as far to say he's one of my favourite vocalists. He gives a certain sense of sincerity and believability (and not to mention creativity with his melodies) that makes him instantly appealing to me.
And to be honest I really haven't listened to enough Dave Matthews to know, haha.
