Their former singer was better (and so was the drummer, who also left), but its really the change in sound that does this in.

Auf Ferner Zeit is a prime example of the upped complexity in Rekreatur. There is so much going on. So many time signature changes, riffs, melodies. They somehow manage to fit in a dog's bark in the middle of one of the musical interludes. Hilarious.
Well said to the person who stated EQ don't take themselves too seriously. They are a fun band. An extremely technically proficient, fun band. A perfect mix of the old and the new.
I am warming to this album in a similar way to how I did with Sagas. The first few tracks are very immediate and are instantly likeable (up to Monkey Island). EQ save the more complex tracks for later, the ones that require more listens and ultimately give more rewards to the listener who perseveres. In spite of this structure, which EQ must see as an optimum way of structuring their albums at this moment in time, it doesn't feel like a plagiaristic retread of their sophomore release.
I'm looking forward to my CD and iTunes orders arriving so I can try and follow the lyrics. My German is non-existent but I try to growl along anyway. Hopefully there will be translations on the inlay card.

Excellent!
Less folk? You're just missing the point. The folk is still there as always but now they added symphonic elements. Lineup change, musical changes. The new vocals seems more powerful than the previous and has a different impact on the instrumental. So, the bigger the vocals, the bigger the sound wave must be. And they just delivered another work of art...
Sorry for not lining up for the opinionless comments based on a review of a all-truth reviewer.
Yes, I'm a fanboy.

He's not missing the point. He has an opinion, you have your own. That's all there is to it. If you think your opinion is so much better, write your own review and educate us on why we're 'wrong'.

I'm just stating a fact that isn't opinion dependent. The album has the same folk influences. That's the fact. I agree that there are more symphonic elements than in the previous ones, but the folk remains.
The lead singer is different, so they choose a (not that) different approach.

That should end the discussion. If you're so intent on proving me wrong, which you can't because it's simply my opinion, write your own review, and I'll be glad to read it.

Okay, decided I really like this. A lot. It has the same feel as Sagas to me, and even if it falls short of it, I'm not disappointed.

For me, the most noticeable shift in sound has to do with the keyboards. They've reduced the amount of additional folk instrumentation (flutes, for example), which were originally provided by the keyboards, and have increased the amount of melodies played on guitar, which I consider a noble effort to change things up. Am I seriously the only one that thinks "Die Afffeninsel" is awesome? Maybe I'm just a sucker for flighty marimba... I did really prefer the extended, black metal screams of the Sagas vocalist to the new, more death-metal-reminiscent vocals on Rekreatur. Also, has anyone else gotten the extended version with the acoustic cuts? They're actually pretty fun.
