Opeth dont have complete wankfests.
True. That was a poor example on my part.

Dude, how the fuck don't Opeth have good songwriting!?!?! I've never heard that, except for coke blasting on BRI maybe.
I do agree that I prefer crazy solos over simple structures, but overall songwriting ability is usually most important.

This is where it can get relative. In general, you can make a conclusion on how well written a song is, but at the end of the day, its how you like it. I can be intrigued and satisfied by strange song structures, varying speeds, and complexity as long as the song as a whole is tolerable. DT arent bad song writers, they're just not that great. My point is that theres a difference between 'songwriting' and 'music.' I love Dream Theater's music, but I can see where people's tastes are different.

DT's strongest songwriting is prevalent on this album, (and maybe SFAM) imo.
I think Moore was a great songwriter, and the best the band had.

What movie is Metropolis - Part One the intro/theme song for? This Message Edited On 03.11.08

do you mean movie? as far as I know there is none. they wrote part 1 as a joke, just to play up to the epic theme. when people went fucking crazy over it they made Scenes.
then again, if there is a movie that features that song as a theme, i'd love to see it.

Yeah i meant movie, the intro sounds exactly like something i've heard from a movie, one i didn't really watch or something though cause' i have no idea.

I recently got into Marillion and the first thing that hit me is the similarities with DT I&W. Another Day is a complete rip-off of the song bitter suite found on the album Misplaced Childhood. The way Petrucci solo is really similar. Lot more technical but the scale and the sound is really similar.

Hmm, I'm surprised that there isn't some idiot ranting about how much they hate this album and band with every other word misspelled, poor grammar and homophobic epithets. There seems to be at least one of those on every review. This Message Edited On 08.07.08
