While some may feel "derivative" is the best description of Free Energy's debut LP 'Stuck On Nothing', "Retro" is more apt. Fusing classic rock, glam rock, indie-leaning power-pop & some Strokes-inspired garage rock, it is a cleanly produced (by James Murphy) album made to sound accessible & current. The LP is at its best on its first 4 tracks, when the riffs are soaring & the hooks are pushed to the forefront. A tad one-paced, the quintet unfortunately never quite reach a higher gear, leaving us without a clear highlight & meaning the 2nd half of the album feels a little stale. Still, it's a rather fun & relatively consistent 45 minutes, which is ultimately a promising debut. Recommended Tracks: Dream City, Dark Trance, Free Energy & Bang Pop.

I tried listening to the album in reverse order & the like Yeti, and I still couldn't totally get into them. They're solid, but nothing more than that imo.
I did the sound-off like comment just in case it sneaks into my top 25 for the year... But I doubt it.
I've seen some really mixed reviews for this... One of the main reasons I gave it a listen. There are some scathing ones around, but some really positive ones also. I'ma bit in-between.

scathing? really? I've yet to see them.
and tbh I'm surprised this wasn't right up your alley.
you seem to dislike the album a bit more than that rating is letting on but then again I suppose I found it a bit underwhelming on my first few spins.
as always (your) opinions are appreciated and celebrated.

Honestly I was a little disappointed by this but to be fair it's not really up my alley

Yeti, I know why you would think I like it, but I'm not the hugest fan of bands like The Strokes & Jet... And this album can sort of be compared to those bands in sound. Juts a personal thing. It's probably a low 3.5, if anything.

Jet sucks and Julian Casablancas is divisive (even tho I lurve him)
