It's true, ya know. Just like how the Beatles could never top Revolver.

Thank you. It's cool that someone notices (even though everyone did). Once I'm unbanned I have some editing to do. I want to take out those stupid paragraph lables and change the track-by-track section into larger paragraphs.

This is my favourite Opeth album to date, a great mix of the style of Damnation with their past work. I feel more energy from this album than any of their others, and am enjoying it a lot at the moment. Just above Damnation and Blackwater Park in my book.

ShadowsFallen, it does have a very crushing feel to it... but I can't help but be pissed when that ultra heavy part that literally grinds into my head (I forget what Mikael's saying... he drags out about 5 syllables) goes for less than 30 seconds. I thought I'd never say this about a prog band of any kind, but this album has too many riffs that aren't repeated enough. Reverie is a dream that ends too quickly. Atonement jumps from one riff to the next too quick. The riff going on whilst Mikael is growling "confessions stuck in your mouth, long gone demons reappear!" in Harlequin Forest stops too abruptly, although the acoustic riff that follows is possibly the best I've heard.

Besides from that, the album is completely without flaws. I can't wait until this kid at school gives it back to me after WEEKS. Opeth's best album, and rivals Suspended Animation and Catch 33 as the best album of this year.

I feel the same way. They had some incredible riffs in the album, but they would cycle through them without repeating them. It's still good either way.

I've been thinking about it lately: what exactly makes Opeth death metal? From the other bands of the genre I've heard, Opeth don't really have any similarities besides Mikael's growling.

It seems like heavier power-metal to me.

It's progressive. There's really nothing death metal about them other than the vocals.

Yeah, so why are they still in death metal?

Because we don't have a progressive subgenre and they fit into death metal better than any others.

I love practically all of Opeth's work. They are always very pleasing to the ear and are an amazing blend of melodic and brutal. This reveiw just epitomizes everything that is good about the album! Excellent review of an incredible album.

The only three Opeth albums I own are Blackwater Park, Still Life, and Ghost Reveries. This one just doesn't amount to the other two, but not many albums can. So I'll give this a 4/5.

In my opinion, those are their best and most difinitve albums anyway. I'd say BWP and Still Life are equally great, and this one slightly less great.

only after 5 listens i released the awesomeness of this album. very original melodies and harlequin forest is the most interesting song. i'm sorry but great conjuration is not a flat death metal song.

No, but it's heavy as hell. Listen towards the end - that's death metal.

This is last on my Opeth ladder now.

I'd also say that Deliverance is a much better album than Blackwater Park.

[Eh, I've listened to this quite a few times, and I'm of the impression it's nowhere near the likes of Blackwater or Still Life. For now, it gets a 3.5./QUOTE=Scruples]

Thats pretty much what I feel about this album. Its not good ol' Opeth, but its not bad either. Just disappointing and maybe even "selling out" *GASP* I hope not though

BTW, the review is excellent. This Message Edited On 12.15.05
