Well, I'm using the definition I provided to state it's remarkable because it is a change in the way Green Day creates music, it has a larger scope, the lyrics are written for a conceptual album, and he song structure has changed to where their songs are now not just 2 min songs compiled into an album but one that includes a 9 min song that is diverse and one of my favorites off the album.
If your using "remarkable" as just another way too say good or great then we're just mixing up terminology.
@benerooni - We're not misreading, we're both editing our posts so much that the rebuttal underneath doesn't make sense anymore once the above post was edited, lol, I've done about twice already myself.

Well, what else do you call telling someone they know nothing about the Beatles other than the 3 songs they one heard on the radio(aka a singles guy)??? And your argument about 5 min songs isn't the issue, it's a 9 min song, show me a band that's created a song that long, never questioned that a band hasn't done 5 min songs, simply said your argument about how 'every band's created a 5 min song' is too generic to argue.
Lol. This argument is stupid you're becoming less rational with each post. I've already quoted you a punk band that put a 10 minute song to record in 1981 but there are plenty of bands who writes songs of 7/8/9 minutes plus. The fact Green Day wrote 'Jesus of Suburbia' for American Idiot simply doesn't strike me as particularly remarkable. Yeah it was a longer song than normal for them but it doesn't sound particularly un-Green Day as such. It's not like they suddenly incorporated three minute passages of ambiance or radical time signature changes into their sound. The only thing that makes American Idiot stand out amongst the rest of Green Day's discography is it's their first (as far as I'm aware) politically motivated album. I wouldn't call this remarkable though, and the anthemic pop rock this album is made up of seems like a natural progression in accord to the bands previous works. It was a move to stay relevant but this isn't a record that sounds like anything other than Green Day.

"this isn't a record that sounds like anything other than Green Day."
If that's the case then what's your reasoning behind the masses of so called "old school Green Day fans" hating and disowning the new material? I know SO many people who claim to love old Green Day but just don't like the new stuff. You just said it sounds like their old selves, so someone's gotta be wrong.

Green Day shot up from being a relatively popular pop rock band to world famous rock icons with this records release. The songs they wrote were a lot more catchy but lacked some of the lasting power and integrity of their older stuff and it simply isn't as good as their previous releases which would explain some of the dislike. That and a lot of misguided fans would consider the popularity and critical acclaim this received in mainstream media as Green Day being sell outs and this would be reason enough for them to hate the record. I'm sure other reasons thrown about would include shit like 'they've lost their punk attitude' etc not that Green Day will ever be known as true punk but whatever.
The point is none of this makes American Idiot a remarkable album, either for music as a whole or Green Day themselves.

That was a well written argument, I can respect that.

It's nice to have a discussion rather than trading around petty insults for once.

I didn't dispute that:
this record made a huge impact in the mainstream media and made Green Day far more relevant in recent pop culture

I'm actually sorry that you leave. Beside your taste in music, which is yours and you have the right
to have it - so I respect it -, I always thought you make very consistent reviews, very well written
with valid opinions as they are very well argued. The only review I though was kinda crappy was Dear
Agony. I thought you were too agressive.
To this album and this band in particular: Green Day always were in my favorite list; they are like
one of the first I heard when music started to become my most vicious adiction. The only thing I
dislike about this band (besides the obvious lyrics) is the fact that they are far too much
repetitive. Songs like "Boulevard of Broken dreams" and "wake me up when september ends" would be
simply awesome if the melody wasn't the same for the while song. And that's pretty much what I think
about this album: good to listen, catchy, but repetitive.
Anyway, see ya :D

Um....is an album being a landmark release and reaching so many people a reason for a higher rating? Or is it better to review based on the quality of music. Personally i don't give a shit about it's affect on pop culture.

This album is a landmark in that Green Day shirts were sold at Hot Topic and it apparently made them cool for 12 year old emo kids.
