'I think Mastodon is closer to Neurosis and ISIS '
Fair cop, I can see the similarities to Isis for sure.

wakeem, I apologize, maybe I was unclear, I was not saying that you are an ass at all. You did nothing wrong. And yes, Dream Theater and Mastodon are VERY different but I meant that just as Dream Theater are the kings or prog right now, maybe someday, if Mastodon continues on the path they are on right now, they will be at the status that Dream Theater has. I never meant that Mastodon's music was similar to DT's because it's not

So far the only Mastodon album I've likes is their latest but i'm curious about this one

Dream Theater is an incredible band, and if they are not at the top of prog right now, would you mind telling me who is?

Opeth are at the top of Sputnik, not prog music in general.

Dream Theater is just the most "mainstream" out of all the progressive metal acts (how and why I have no clue), but I think Opeth and Porcupine Tree have way more consistent releases than Dream Theater, not to mention they have been innovating themselves with each release.

aight, I do like the direction Mastodon have been taking over the last couple of albums also. I am hoping they continue in that direction.
I also wish they clean up their live act a bit too so they become worth seeing! Thats the one thing that disappoints me about Mastodon atm.
Tbh I dont know many other bands that are similar in stature and musically together to Mastodon so I can see why you attempt to draw the comparisons to status instead of musical, probably should have just stated that at the start to not confuse. Isis have similarities, but id consider Mastodon 'bigger' at this point - i doubt Isis' new album will outsell CtS (this coming with absolutely no hard evidence to back it up :P ). Plus I havent listened to Neurosis even though I hear the comparison all the time.
And personally given the massive following they have, id consider DT to be the kings of prog atm. Yes I enjoy PT and Opeth more - especially with each new release cos DT have kinda died a bit. But Black Clouds was a bit of a return to form, DT still have it.

Dream Theater are definitely the most pretentious modern-prog band though

nice review, and a very good album to, although when talking about pink floyd i would say porcupine tree would be more similar at being top of the genre.

Just because something is mainstream, does not mean it is bad. While I Love Opeth, Porcupine Tree's last few releases have not been so great, and I truly don't think they are as good as DT. I do, however, LOVE Opeth. I'll say it a million times. I LOVE OPETH. But PT isn't that great in my opinion
