whether he did it better or not is a moot point, it's that he made it popular

I usually knock a rap song down a few points if I have to look for the lyrics on paper, on screen or whatever to understand them. When I found the lyrics for “Illmatic” I realized that Nas isn’t as innovative as many people say, not even for his time. Comparing Nas to rappers like Ghostface Killah......dont pretend you udnerstand Ghostface even the majority of the time....

can't say i agree with the review, but you make good points expressed lucidly, so pos'd.
however: 'Souljaboytellem.com is equal to this is many respects'.
too much dope? ;)

This is actually the best review of this album, pos'd. Of course I disagree with the rating and think everything Nas says on this album is gold.

This album could be the intro, NY State of Mind, then 8 songs of bullshit and it would still be a classic to me.

This review is a lesson to reviewers out there. Review albums that are 20 fucking years old with some context. This album can't realistically be called just 'good'. Show me a recent rap album with no filler garbage songs, doesn't happen.

Illmatic is the GOAT hip-hop record. Easily

Yeah the delivery, along with the beats, the lyrics, the song sequence, the historical significance, and the overall hunger felt on each track.
NY state of mind/halftime/represent are 3 of the greatest hip-hop tracks ever, and 3 of the strongest tracks on the album. If there was 3 more on the album like those I can assure you, I wouldn't be one to complain.

I'm pretty curious what you think is better than Illmatic in terms of overall hip-hop greatness. I've known a lot of hip-hop heads in my day, and none of them would dismiss it as a non-contender. Obviously whatever you choose to call the best is subject to opinion, but to say that it isn't one of the best isn't true.
