great point fripp dude, totally agree, the absurdity, the flo and eddie stuff kinda makes me cringe sometimes, plus 200 motels movie and "soundtrack" are not very good

"Frippertronics, I really think you're just missing out on some of the smart, hidden jokes inside Zappa's lyricism. It happens I guess. What can I say, dudes a genius. It's hard to get some of his philosophical, highly intellectual and metaphorical humor."

I've been listening to the guy for four years. Maybe I am missing something, but whenever he tries to be funny, it comes across as tryhard, bitter and outright snooty. I get most of his jokes, but I ain't laughing. It's the absurd stuff that gets to me.

@wham 200 Motels is okay. The movie is better.

The Flo and Eddie stuff is literally some of Zappa's worst

And yeah 200 Motels is trash

Also thinking all he makes are piss/shit/slut jokes makes no sense since a lot of stuff, especially the 60s stuff was straight satire.

I mean you love Absolutely Free, but somehow don't find Plastic People or Brown Shoes Don't Make It funny? Are we even listening to the same band or what?

was talking mainly about his later stuff when it was abundant

I'll agree to disagree, considering he lost the plot with the synclavier garbage and went on a steep decline in the 80s. Considering he seriously thought about getting that lineup back together before he found out he had cancer speaks levels about how mediocre his current band and material was.

I listen to Zappa for the musicianship, not the humor so I pay more attention to the compositions rather than the "humor" that lost its edge by Sheik Yerbouti.

"I was making a joke about Ars but okay"

was it the comment about Zappa's supposed "intellectual" lyrics? Went over my head considering he's far from intellectual.

Honestly I listen to it for both.

I love Zappa's sense of humor because it's raw, (maybe edgy) unfiltered, and pushes the limits of Freedom of Speech. Plus even his piss jokes are mainly him being silly as shit I appreciate a guy who knows how to loosen up and not take himself too seriously. Especially in a world of prog where artists take mythical billshit and make it sound serious.

I love his compositions the most of course, but his lyrical concepts really stressed his ideals and who he was as s person: an analytical, strange, silly, and passionate cynic.

Of course Zappa was intelligent. But he's also a cynical asshole, so a lot people dismiss what he has to say.

"Uh ... you do?"

Of course. A lot of my music taste is specifically centered around this idea.

Just because I take a lot things seriously myself, doesn't mean I don't aspire to be otherwise (also sometimes I feel like you guys misinterpret my tone and guess that I'm more serious than I actually am... but that part's up for debate.)

I am serious at the moment though.

That part of him is what usually loses me, though it's definitely part of what makes Zappa who he is.
