Your review is well-written no doubt, but I had to speak up about this part

The band also promised us more of a focus on lead guitar for Constellations, and boy did they ever deliver on that. In a complete reversal from Messengers, lead guitar drives the majority of the songs on this album. And not just any lead guitar either: we're talking exceptionally tasteful, technical, and pleasing leads.

Aside from a few solos, this album is barely any more technical or lead-driven than it's predecessor. And even still, none of the solos are terribly blistering or jaw-dropping. Just by listening to them you can tell this is the first album the guitarists have attempted to write any solos. I'll give you that the lead stuff is pleasing, but I'd say the rest of the above quote is sort of exaggerated.

Good point Eric. But lightning-fast fingers and loads of cool effects doesn't necessarily make for enjoyable guitar work. If you aren't extremely skilled in song construction, all the technical, shred-tastic lead guitar in the world won't do you any good.

My point (which was made earlier in the review) was that metalcore is all about the attention a band pays to crafting their songs and their sound. On Constellations, ABR is exceptionally good at making their music flow well from song to song and most importantly, within the songs themselves. The songs are very well-structured, and the leads that they weave into this structure may not be extremely technical, but they are ALWAYS pleasing and fit the style and structure of the song perfectly. And the leads are EASILY technical enough not to drag the sound down...it's not like they're too simple.

Oh I completely agree about the fact that shredding =/= good song, but all I'm saying is that the way you described the guitar work is a little misleading. It's more technical than most metalcore bands who usually just play power chords and breakdowns with one note, but from the way you described it, it just came across as a bit exaggerated to me. But I still agree the leads fit the song, are pleasing and relatively tasteful though.

Sorry Waior and ScorpianStan, I've just heard this stuff too many times to count. There are some cool moments, I will give you that. Drumming did nothing for me and the breakdowns made me cringe.

Really!?! Too bad.

So are you saying this is really sub-par for metalcore, or just that you don't like mainstream metalcore and this album does nothing to differentiate itself?

I think its a bit of both. There are some cool melodies here and there but like I said, I've heard most of this too many times in the past. This is still better than most metalcore if that helps?

Makes total sense; especially given your decidedly different musical taste. Glad you gave it a try though.

I gave it two tries to be exact : ). I kind of think metalcore is a gateway into better metal. I used to love this stuff so much. End of Heartache used to be one of my favourite albums in 04 hahahah.

For sure. The stuff that I found compelling and, well, br00tal, two years ago has completely changed. Thanks to Sputnik and it's "better metal", I've found metalcore as a whole to be a bit abhorrent.

Haha, but I guess I make a few exceptions.

I hear you on that. Don't get me wrong though, I still throw in some Killswitch, Bleeding Through, and Darkest Hour once in a while.

haha idk...i appreciate and actually love a lot of prog metal and that kind of thing, but i still have a big soft spot for catchy, well-executed metalcore. It's like good pop/rock--it may be kind of generic, but you can always enjoy listening to it. Or at least i can, lol.

I'll agree with the metalcore being a gateway statement. But now, I listen to such a small amount of metal (relative to the average sputniker), and the amount of metalcore I listen is bearly there. But the whole point of this statement is that there is one fantastic metalcore record I remember that I haven't even found on sputnik: Forever Is Forgotten's The Architecture Is Burning. You guys should check that out; it's pretty kick ass.

No, Messengers is as boring as metalcore gets (albeit with fantastic drumming); Thrill Seeker is likewise.
