Generic is a word that does tend to get tossed around a lot, and I think it's pretty fitting. I haven't heard this album, but generic to me means I'm going to listen to it and be able to pretty much predict every thing after another. VERY typical in this kind of music unfortunately.

I dont find anything in the review that justifies this being generic, there aren't many breakdowns at all. In terms of song formula I don't see an obvious pattern in how the write songs. Yes they have melodic passages, wow. The songs don't flow very well and they do become boring I have to agree though. The only band I can think of that sounds remotely like this is the Faceless and in reality they sound about as much like Born of Osiris as something I dont care to think.

its like any band that uses breakdowns and the like is labelled generic just because they didn't invent breakdowns. Their last album was pretty generic apart from the quirky keyboard moments, this is much less so.

Eh, haven't heard the record so I can't say for myself. I like The New Reign a lot, but that is also plagued with poor songwriting. Choppy as hell.

yeah its better than this, their songwriting hasn't improved at all, they just went off in a different direction. They are no longer impersonating Meshuggah adding a deathcore touch to it.

There's less drum wankery now. Which is a bad thing.

To say this is generic makes you a complete and utter idiot, no offense. It's cool if you don't dig it. It just seems like metalcore has become a genre everyone loves to bash. Sure the scene kids and typical bands in the scene make it easy. But! by no means does this mean there is no such thing as an original band in the genre...and for godsakes...there are even a few talented ones.

@NatureSavriour. Yes, because judging whether something is generic or not totally isn't completely opinion based. I'm sorry, I forgot this was set in stone that this album isn't generic.
Also, to further illiterate why I found this album generic (no, I wasn't just tossing the word around). I'll first start off by what I personally feel is "generic". Generic to me is sounding like everyone else, having no distinct quality to separate itself. Which, to me perfectly describes this album. The low chugs (which literally sound identical in every song), the solos, the vocals, the keyboarding. I could go on, but you get my point.
Maybe I am bias, because everything I've heard on A Higher Place, I've already heard a thousand times, and done better.

I don't understand why this band catches so much heat. They are far better than ( in my opinion ) over hyped bands like Suicide Silence and Job For A Cowboy who are so obviously metal by numbers. Born of Osiris deploy ingenuity and an out of the box type of songwriting and their technical prowess is standout. I also don't understand why Ronnie's vocals are so looked down upon while Karl from Mis Sigs can use the same style across two albums and everybody's ok with that. People are too fickle. Born of Osiris is a great band and their new CD is way quality. Rag on me....now!

While I agree with most of what you said, Karl from misery signals is better than this vocalist, no contest.
Still haven't gotten this :-/
|

lol, Karl has more talent than this entire band combined
well, that's being unfair. they're fair musicians, just can't write music worth shit
