yeah i might just have to bump this to a 5, hits hard in all the right places
however i've never been able to build an attachment to it like i did the first 2 Modest Mouse records, but that's mostly for personal reasons

understandable. It's the opposite for me.

In all seriousness though, I heard the first song a while ago
It was good, emotional and all, but I don't really think this kind of alternative Indie/rock/whatever
is for me. Still wanna give this a chance though, so how's the first song compared to the rest?

My first MM album was their latest effort.. which I thoroughly enjoyed.... I went backwards through their discog..
First song is a highlight but there isn't much dropoff..

First song isn't really indicative of what the rest of the album is like. Try Out of Sight, that song is for everyone.

Thanks, but why do you use ellipsis (or kind of I guess) so much?
It's confusing to read

I guess I am just used to not using proper grammar when chatting. I blame Facebook chat and texting haha. Your advice is duly noted.

That's better, and that's ok, I still have yet to recover my attention span for what youtube did to me
basically

This is so good. Really riffs hard as well. Love I Would Hurt A Fly, Out of Sight and Untrustable the most at this stage but they all rule.

Excellent choices, all three. Untrustable was infuckingcredible live. Dat piano part.

You saw them live? Still sound amazing?
Ending of Out of Sight oh man, love how passionate his vocals are.

yeah, they were fantastic. He sings in a way lower register live, but it worked. It was really emotional.

The vox do seem like they would be really hard to pull off live, especially seeing them years after
they were recorded.
I love how all the songs are so effortlessly able to change pace and just how spacious they all are,
there is so much room to
develop ideas and the guitar playing is really quite incredible.

Yeah, I really do think Marstch is the best guitar player of the 90s. His playing both technically brilliant and evocative.

I'm gonna get killed for this but I have been a fan of Built to Spill for about a decade. You in Reverse was the 1st album that they put out after I began jamming them and it was my favorite of theirs then and still is today. This album is great but for me not a 5.

Haven't heard a better indie rock guitarist to be honest. There are so many layers in all the songs.
Fucking love the heavy as breakdown sorta thing about 3 minutes in to Stop the Show that leads into the really upbeat verse. The drumming in that part is so good.

Dude, You in Reverse is really good. I think you're crazy to put it above this and Keep It Like A Secret, but it's an awesome album. Traces, Liar, and Conventional Wisdom are top-tier BtS.

Why would you get killed for that bro, your opinion is as valid as anyone else's, probably even more so than mine seeing as I've only been listening to this band for two weeks.

The only guitarist that I listen to on the reg who I might put at that level (indie genre specific) is Dave Knudson. I was a little bummed tho, last time I saw Minus the Bear a lot of guitar was tracked.
