Michigan is just as good as this if not better. Both albums are decent but neither of them have much replay value.

This is a damn good album, but the entire second half (save for a couple tracks) is quite bad.

Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is amazing. Tears me up every time. Heh.

Best album of 2005 because it is technically amazing, the timing is wonderful, the songs are thoughtfully poppy but eccentric, and Sufjan experiments with all sounds and places to put them. Horns, banjo, oboe, and whatever else he can play make this album

Donkey, I hear you're a sufjan stevens fan, don't ask how I know, I'm just good.

I bought this cd because I'd heard of sufjan and had 15 bucks to burn. Illinoise soon became a cd i enjoyed falling asleep to, untill i just stoped playing it. Playing this cd while driving to chicago is very appropriate.

Yeah I had that fag idea when I was going to Pretentious Music Festival as we drove into Chicago. It was so lame and yet fittingly appropriate. This Message Edited On 11.22.07

ILLINOISE LOL GET IT GICE

I gave this a 4.5 as well (making it very high on my list being that 4.5 and 5 are rarely granted by me) because of the magnitude of noises presented fluidly here.
This guy goes from thumping pop to noise rock all in "the man of metropolis...", expands huge amounts of content like folk but with the feel of big band jazz in "c'mon feel the illinoise" then breaks it all down to the softness the most intimate singer-songwriter moment in "casimir pulaski day". To give this expansive album any less than a 4.5 would be a crime but to give it a 5 would be overstating its impact on culture.
He hasn't blown up yet... yet, but for those who are listening, we are on the edges of our seats for more of the best music our generation may see. Seriously.

I'm sure they're the last band that anyone needs to ask about how to make an album.

I'm giving it a 3.5
It is massively overrated on here, not the best of the year.
'Deadwing' By Porcupine Tree was the best.
This is a great album.
But seriously, I do not think there is enough instrumental depth.
Sure, there are lots of instruments, but there aren't a great variety of musical techniques used.
Just a similar vibe placed throughout 20 songs.

good point but I feel like he managed to hit much different perspectives through many similar techniques. PT? interesting choice
|
| |
Lol I put it up to a 4.5 then back to a 4.
It does grow on you, but I really want to check out his earlier stuff now as a result.
And yeah, deadwing was just such a brilliant prog record.
I think it was better than FOABP, but FOABP won album of the year this year by more, simply because of it's spectacular relevance and atmosphere.
