I'm a huge DT fan, and I don't get why people bash this album. It doesn't feel or sound half assed, and I've not heard this much in Pettruci's solos since Six Degrees (Blind Faith most notably.)

Petrucci's solos in this album arent anything special at all, even though I love his work on this album. The Root of All Evil solo is awesome, Sacrificed Sons solo is a little out of placed and weird, and the Octavarium solo with the orchestra isnt anything special. The solos dont compare to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence though I like this album better than the first disc on that cd.

I really like some of the songs on this album. Of course it's no Awake.

but Myung, sadly, still seems overshadowed by his other band members.
sadly i disagree, Myung isn't into the limelight aspect of the band true. However Myung double's most of petruccis work on a 6 string bass, just imagine all those streches on that thick neck.
A highly underated member of the band, but in his playing and his parts on anyone of the Dream Theater albums he is not overshadowed. but again thats my opinion.
I enjoyed the album and your review, it was a good read

Myung isnt that underrated. Not to say hes overrated, because hes definitely not, but I find hes one of music's most popular bassists. I think he won a "top bassist poll" on this site or the sister site.
But IMO, hes the least talented member of the band (excluding the naturally-talented LaBrie).

Hm, I disagree pretty much with nearly all of you.
This album is my 3rd favorite. I am a DT obsessive, I own ALL bootlegs, live, studio, and nearly all projects involving DT members (LTE, JJ, Neal More, hammer of the gods)
This album is more creative than anything, no one just hears it.
None of you can hear the amazing bass leads, nor even how carefully each song is written.
This review was very well written, I disliked the use of ominous, and his opinions. Seeing as the entire CD is one GIANT loop (Octave 8 steps in music for a scale starting in F Minor, G A, B, C, D, E, back to F minor a octave higher in octavarium whichi is a endless loop.)
For me, I have SFAM, TOT, and Octavarium on top 3. Because I can hear how well made this CD was. I just think the TOT fans are upset that DT like every other album is different.

Here is something else I have come to think upon..
The fact that DT is Progressive METAL is the fact so many of you are not grasping. You have a respectable opinion but it's also METAL which is not always extremely long 400 note solos, or heavily distorted PMs. As well as Metal has some of the easiest drum beats ever (ever listen to Stryper?)
They are still DT with the weird Time Signature, key order and poetic and deep lyrics.
And to Muvaynian^ I don't know what you mainly said for the most part, but this is not nu-metal in the least. Mudvayne is nu-metal. This is still Progressive Metal/Rock.

I really like this album, all the songs are pretty cool, but yeh I think that Myung didn't showed up what he can really do. Anyways the concept about the artwork and meaning of the numbers on every song and references in some riffs or notes to old songs in each song is really good. Octavarium shows the greatness of the band. Everything ends where it began.
Good review though

I think this album's a little drawn out, for the most part. They obviously put alot of effort into the conceptual side, but it's still rather lengthy.
The thing is, there really isn't a bad song on here, it's just that they could have used some quality control to cut out ten minutes or so.
Still a solid album with some fantastic tracks. But it's ToT for me

I just listened to the song Octavarium (skipping the first 4 1/2 minutes). Utter brilliance... easily one of the most epic songs written.

Much like 6DOIT, this album lately has been growing on me with every listen. Thogh I still would have to say it's my least favorite of the six DT albums i own (though i may soon like it more than ToT) it still really kicks ass.
The way i break this album down is that there is one fucking amazing piece of music that i can't live without, and that would bve the title track, only surpassed by the song "Home" off of SFAM.
Then, there are three more amazing songs that arent quite as good as octavarium, but none the less some of DT's best. These are TROAE, Panic ATtack, and Sacrificed SOns, which i love more and more with each listen.
Then we have three great tracks that aren't neard DT's best, but still aesome. These Walls, Never Enough, and I walk beside you (soley based on it's chorus that actuall came close to making me cry once) are these thre. Then we have The Answer Lies within, which is one of the worst DT songs imo, but i don't dislike it, and i do enjoy it, its just nothinng much (like most DT ballads)
STill, there is no filler here, no track that i skip. Great album that i feel deserves more credit despite its lack of originality.
