I have never been one to give a **** about "How a genre is supposed to sound". Maybe its because I don't particularly enjoy raw and primitive black metal, who knows. And in terms of sloppiness, I don't really see how the instruments are not sloppy. You certainly can't call this a tight album at all.

There's no need to be an ass. I was saying that DARKTHRONE is raw and primitive black metal. I wasn't saying that that is how black metal has to sound. Either way, if you're looking for beautiful and super-tight, processed albums black metal is the wrong place to look. Still, I don't see how this album is sloppy. They don't get off time and all the riffs are played as they should be.

Hahaha sorry, I didn't mean to come off as an ass. And I do like black metal, just not as raw as this. Black metal is one of my favourite types of metal (recently, I just picked up Deathspell Omega's Fas and Leviathan Massive Conspiracy Against All Life). I just find some of this type of black metal to be a little too raw for my liking.

Concerning sloppy, I think its more in the way of production that makes the musicianship seem sloppy. The instruments might be on time, but it just sounds like they did one recording take and then said "Done".

Kind of, but they have a better sense of atmosphere which makes the music way more interesting. Their production standards are alot better too.

Deathspell Omega's production is probably better, but not Leviathan's. I would say its the same or maybe a little worse than Darkthrone.

I was probably just being a little touchy. It just seemed like you were alluding to me being a black metal elitist. This is certainly not the rawest production in black metal, though. Maybe the word you're looking for is minimalistic, which I guess is what you were saying earlier when you said you didn't like black metal this raw and primitive. That's cool. I like raw and primitive and some of the less primitive stuff like Emperor and Ulver.

But yeah, Darkthrone probably didn't do more than a take or two for any track on this album. Fenriz likes to keep costs cheap. Varg said that he's has actually never done more than one take for anything except for a bass riff that he says he completely screwed up in one song. I always thought that was pretty cool. I'm recording a black metal album in June and July. I hope I can manage to keep everything down to one or two takes. Mine is going to be less primitive, though. I'll make sure that you guys hear it when it's finished, though, haha. This Message Edited On 05.11.08

I don't see why anyone would complain about how this lacks atmosphere and 'bleak emotion'. That's obviously not the point of the record at all.

I would love this if it wasn't for the recording quality, man. I just can't enjoy that quality, it's such a shame.

Leviathan have improved big time on their production with Massive Conspiracy Against All Life. Liking that album alot at this point in time.

I guess I just don't understand this album then. I'm checking out Transylvainia Hunger right now and its a huge step up from this.

Eakflanderyof,

No worries dude. I wasn't perceiving you as an elitist or anything. "Minimalistic" was the word I was looking for and thats why I don't really enjoy this album that much, but to each his own. Kinda weird how I guessed that they do their takes in one shot, huh? hahahaha And concerning your black metal band recording soon, I would be very interested in hearing what you record. Just post what you did in my account or something or write a review for your own album hahahaha. Cheers dude!

Yeah, most people on this site seem to prefer ABITNS, but I prefer TH as well. ABITNS is more diverse and less "samey" but TH has some excellent riffs. Fenriz says that black metal has always been about guitar riffs for him, though. He thinks the drums should simply be there.

Well, I'm not positive that Darkthrone does all their stuff in one shot. Varg said that Burzum's were all done in one shot. I would guess that Darkthrone's probably are as well. It's nothing too difficult to play.

As for my recording, I probably won't go to the extent to write a review for my material, haha, but I'll tell everyone that they can go check it out on myspace or something. I wish I had a band to help me out, though. I'm doing everything myself so it's going to cost me a ****load of money and it's going to be more difficult than it is for normal "bands." 35 bucks an hour.
