I'm surprised AngelPhoenix, chaoticmelody, and myriaeye haven't shared their thoughts about this album.

I somehow doubt they would have anything important to say.

because they probably didn't even listen to it and rated it to bump up other 2008 albums

So I listened to as many tracks of this as I could off of myspace and youtube and I dunno. The songs are subdued and nice, but I don't catch the emotional weight of them like everyone else seems to. I think For Emma operates on the public conscious like the albums Funeral and Domestica do. You know the back story and then project meaning onto the music. The death of a friend dominates the backstory of Funeral and people immediately latched onto that album as heartbreaking. Tim Kasher's divorce is painted all over Domestica, and people freak out over the lyrical vulnerability (even though that album is all about guitar songwriting). For Emma just seems like another one of these. And that wouldn't matter is these were really really good or interesting songs, but they're not. There are some nice ones, but this guy is just a more touching version of singer songwriter. Listen to the breakdown on "Flume" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62i9Sodwp5o). He really just does some muted scrapes before launching into the final chorus. Especially after doing a few things to break away from his primary chord progressions earlier in the song, resorting to a simple sonic "resetting" before the final chorus is a pretty awkward and lazy device. I just feel like this guy has a unique voice and plays emotively and honestly, but that isn't enough to get by, that is, unless you are in love with the backstory and all the things that make this album larger than it is.

wow, some guy whining and being self important while strumming a guitar and doing multi-tracked vocals. I'm blown away, the best thing of 2008!
