their albums with Tony Martin are decent, but they sound like a bad parody of their former selves

ive never even heard of this album, as a fan of norse mythology i'm intrigued but it seems like most people dont think they did norse mythology justice on the album.

This thing rules, imo. Half of everyone just write it off because no ozzy / dio.

it's simply a boring album and the vocals might actually be the best part of it
but the fact remains that it is simply a big meh

biased opinion
but ive resigned to being on the wrong side of the fence on tony's albums at this point.

It's just a wrong thing to assume that a listener will dislike the tony martin albums simply because dio or ozzy are not involved.
I for a fact really like his voice, but the music displayed on the said records is simply boring. Plain and simple.
So, no heat on Martin, just the musicianship isn't as accomplished as it should be.

You don't think that the ozzy / sabbath camp pretending that this era doesn't even exist (no streaming etc) has no effect on public perception whatsoever? What percentage of metal fans do you think has given it a fair shake?
I think the music has a distinctly different feel and goal than earlier work. Just like Tony did with Dio singing, it wouldn't have made sense to write albums like their earlier ones with someone else singing.

"Just like Tony did with Dio singing, it wouldn't have made sense to write albums like their earlier ones with someone else singing"
Even if Iommi would have wanted to go back to his root sounds, it would br impossible without Bill Ward. Drummers are the ones who make the riffs sound as good as they do, and Iommi never had a drummer as capable as Ward.

I have little interest in the way the public's opinion is formulated. Most of the public are sheep, they will buy shit only because it's over-marketed and whatnot. All of the albums are on YouTube, so anyone can listen and make their own minds about it.
Now the management is a different story. If you're saying the official members do not pay attention to that era that's probably because those albums caused more trouble to be made and brought less money.
It is that simple.

OK but Cozy Powell is legitimately one of the best drummers ever so
Also your response to my second paragraph kind of helps prove my point, if I'm getting what you're putting out. Regardless, I won't go so far as to say there isn't a quality drop here compared to classic albums (I mean come on its like number 14 or something), but I AM saying there is a lot more to offer than people realize.

Yeah, I am not trying to legitimate this album in any way, nor do i try to prove you wrong. I don't really care about all that tbh.
My opinion is that this record is simply not that good and that goes for every black sabbath-tony martin lead album. I dislike this era only because of its poor musicianship. Not because Ozzy and Dio are out of the picture.
Nothing more and nothing less.
People can make their own minds about it, after all, quality in music is a subjective matter.

This record is great, if you forget they are Black Sabbath.

Powell was an amazing drummer but what made tony's doomy riffs sound so good was the swing in Ward's jazzy beats. Otherwise the riffs sound different, even generic to some extent. Just check Iommi's self titled solo album he made in 2000 for further proof. Every song is generic as fuck, but when Bill Ward steps into the picture, the composition elevates and becomes more interesting. I'm not saying Tony is not an exceptional guitarist, he's my all time favorite for crying out loud. All i'm saying is that in contrary to popular beliefs, drummers play a more important role to the way the riffs sound.
And no other man can take Iommi's riffs and make them sound as good. Only Bill Ward has that quality in his playing.

That's when problems arise, when certain albums are labelled as something they're not, but that's another story...
|

I don't see the problem, if the album's good, it's good.

I mean there is something to be said for that.
I still hold that St. Anger would have blown people away if it wasn't the long-awaited new Metallica. And the day when the collective changes their mind about it isn't THAT far off, imo.

I havent jammed this in about a decade and I remember thinking it was so boring. "Lawmaker" and "Anno Mundi" are pretty good tho. Probably warranting a new listen.

Valhalla, Anno Mundi, Jerusalem are so good man.

Valhalla and its intro is so fuckin' great.
And Jerusalem is like the king of 90's punch-the-sky pop metal

This is probably my least favorite Tony Martin album (besides Forbidden ofc) but I’d still say it’s totally underrated and undoubtedly worth checking out.
