well maybe in terms of technicality, yeah. but 6 Degrees takes the same ideas musically as Scenes and makes them more accessible/listenable. plus, it's actually pretty freakin catchy in spots, which is saying a lot considering their style and genre.

Explain how it makes them more accesible? Coming off an album that contains their best ballads, one of their most recognised and loved songs (Home) to a double cd that contains some of the most un-Dt songs they've ever released. Oh, and a 42 minute epic featuring a 6 minute overture. How is that accesible?

well the composition on 6 Degrees is just better across the board. Scenes felt like a mash-up of a tremendously wide variety of different ideas that, however good they all were individually, served to wear you out after repeated listens and didn't always come together cohesively as well as they should have.

6 Degrees, on the other hand, seemed to me like it refined the ideas on Scenes. There was still complexity, but they figured out how to keep it interesting for an entire album. also, there was much more palpable emotion on 6 Degrees, rather than just raw technicality.

6 Degrees is quite nice, but I still feel Scenes is better. I feel that Scenes is overall better planned than 6 Degrees, but 6 Degrees has some amazing songs like Blind Faith and Disappear. 6 Degrees title track is IMO their weakest epic, feels disjointed at many points, but the songs work as individual songs.

I can't agree with the notion that the latter of the 2 albums is musically more refined. This is THE DT album that they wear their heart on their sleeves. The whole concept of originality escaped them with 6 degrees.

Scenes was meant to be a coming together of radically different sounds, it's the whole premise of the album. And further listening only heightens the emotions that DT were trying to get across musically and/or emotionally.

yeah i know that, and a valiant attempt it was. problem is: it doesn't always work. there's a lot of songs that sound really awesome, but then a lot of others that sound like they just threw as many influences as they possibly could at the song -- just for the sake of writing a song with that many influences! i mean i'm not denying that's pretty cool, but it's also going to sound really forced unless you do it absolutely perfectly.

and no way was originality absent on 6 Degrees. yeah it was different, but it was still definitely DT album, just a bit less pretentious.

and good points rutger, blind faith is ahhhhmazing

Title track for 6 degrees^

Yes, Scenes is filled to the brim with influences, more so than any of their other albums, but it's all balanced out nicely. There's no one area where they got lost in their own ability to play as technical and as fast as they can (save for The Dance Of Eternity, but that's the point with that song), everything moves from one transition to the next without required effort on the part of the listener to not cringe.

Disc 2 aside 6 degrees is Dt at their worst in my opinion. They had just come off a very successful tour for an even more successful album and I think they were unsure of where to go next. The result is a sloppy, ill-advised venture into borderline mainstream territory.

oh, hey faggo--I MEAN qwe3.

silly me...so sorry.

Melissa: haha true the title track is a mish-mash. but that's just them paying homage to their past though.

and yeah i guess it's just a difference in tastes. i kinda like the hint of mainstream in 6 Degrees; they seemed a bit more comfortable with that then the extreme spazzy-style they had on Scenes. that's just me though, everyone's gonna be different (obviously lol). and i'm not even saying Scenes is bad...it's a difference of like 0.5 in my ratings.

if you get the chance though, check out Cain's featured review of 6 Degrees...he explains my basic thoughts on the 2 albums even better than i can. plus it's just plain wicked -- the thing would take up a city block if it was written in sidewalk chalk haha

I agree, 6DOIT is their best album in my opinion. It's entire 2nd disc is so genius in itself, it's Dream Theater without the wank, cheese, and is pure musical awesomeness in it's bare form.
