When I saw the Victory records commercial (the mortal-kombat one) I couldn't tell the difference between any of the bands including this one. Now that I listen to one of these guy's songs, my mind changed completely.
Simply amazing, almost on the level of Opeth.
Opeth blows.

I have heard "Mordecai" and I enjoy it something fierce. The only irk I have with it is the emo clean part. Is it a good representation of the album?

Mordecai is probably the best representation of the album. There are some purely death metal songs and there are some entirely emo songs, but Mordecai has a little of everything. I think Alaska is way better, but this is still a good album.
|
| |
Does Alaska have emo clean parts as well, or are they just regular clean parts, like Opeth?

It has some emo clean parts, but very few.

Awesome at worst, "Mordecai"'s outro brings a tear to my eye everytime I listen to it. Much love for these guys.

Emo clean parts?
... Shadows. Please tell me you're educated on emo. Do I have to email you the same thing I sent mazz567?

Hah, I now know emo when I hear it. Thanks a bunch. And send him it...some of it was quite good.

When I say that Between The Buried And Me are probably the greatest and most original band I have ever had the delight to hear, I am being very truthful. Opeth are truly incredible but BtBAM just take it a step further. The amazing amalgamation of clean melodic stuff and brutal death metal is fascinating and a breath of fresh air in the metal scene. Lyrically, they are confusing but very interesting. This album is a perfect 10/10, and Alaska is even better!!! If this band come to the UK im definitely going to see them.

Most original or greatest, no. People have been blending genres for a long time. It normallyt only works when there is an enormous technical proficiency, which BtBaM has, but they are not the most original. When you look at it, they just took generic, albeit technical, metalcore to extremes. They have the heavy parts that flow into more melodic sections and even some clean spots. I'm not saying they are generic but they used a very familiar formula that lots of bands use, from Opeth to Atreyu to Glass Casket (and because this album predated the member changes, this is a valid band to use, although they come from the same scene, so maybe a little less). They did it very well.
Anyone who cares to argue with me, I'd be happy to give more examples.

great review, even greater band.
should be seeing them live soon (fingers crossed)
fun fact: the first track 'coulrophobia' means a fear of clowns.
track 2, 'anablephobia' means the fear of looking up.
get it.....?

Emo, Death Metal, Hardcore, blah blah blah blah....stop trying to pigeon hole a sound, when its entirely a personal experience.
BTBAM are raw as hell on this album and it rocks. Their sound is all over the shop....but guess what? They still do it well and with real clarity.
