I've had this album since 07 but I'm only beginning to really like it right now...definitely will have to bump my rating.

For some reason this is my least favourite Katatonia album.

My favourites from then are Dance of December Souls, then Discouraged Ones and then The Great Cold Distance

Tracks 1, 4, 6 11 and 13 alone win this album at least a 4.5.

This band is also the most inconsistent band among my favorites. Terrible debut, awesome sophomore, then an average album (Discouraged Ones), then the worst, most tedious album ever made (Tonight's Decision), then a cool comeback with LFDGD, then this masterpiece, then another masterpiece, then finally a cool record.

You forgot to mention how bad Night is the New Day is after the 5th song.

I gave NITND a hard 3.0 (actual rating is 3.5) mainly because of Forsaker and Idle Blood =p. The rest are not great but not terrible like Tonight's Decision either.

Excellent Album! City of Glass is a fave. Last Fair Deal Gone Down just a touch better imo.

For the 21st century, i believe this is katatonia's defining record. They obviously moved in a different direction musically at the turn of the new millenium, but the sadness, depression and sorrow is still intact. Absolutely wonderful epics such as closer 'Inside the city of glass' and 'Wealth' show how far the band have come in terms of originality and maturity, whereas grittier, straight-edge songs such as 'Sleeper' and 'Criminals' show the band have not lost their heaviness. It seems that the band here wanted to show a bit more variation, and that they have done, with Renkse and his sometimes crooning, sometimes soaring voice to fit whichever atmosphere is created on a particular track. Experimenting with doomy gloomy metal doesn't always work, but in katatonia's case, it definitely can work.

Defining record with "YOU PASSED THE TEST AND THAT'S SO GOOD FOR YOU OOH LOVE WILL YOU READ THE LETTER I WILL SEND TO YOU." Indeed.
