If Marillion's Misplaced Childhood is the best progressive album of the 80's, Operation: Mindcrime is definitely the best Prog Metal record of that same era.
Incredible songwriting from Chris DeGarmo and an amazing performance from Geoff Tate.
Metal can be smart and these guys always proved that.

Maybe someone has already said this, but someone made me check out Sisters of Mercy and they played a song called "Dominion/Mother Russia" from their Floodland album and the opening part sounds exactly like the guitar melody on "I Don't Believe in Love" -- I mean almost exactly. The thing is that the Sisters of Mercy album was released a few years before this, so....
