more intellegent as in lyrically, instead of mindlessly screaming about satan and **** like mayhem, early dimmu borgir etc. dani actually uses some symbolism, makes you think about the lyrics.

Why is it more intelligent, just because they sing about satan doesn't mean they aren't as good as any other bands

Apparently I was talking about the wrong female vocalist in the title track.

it's a personal opinion, i just think it takes a bit more brains to write the way dani writes than it does to just mindlessly scream about whatever "evil" thoughts come to your head.

Ugh.. well, I respect where they are going, it is what they like. I love their black metal days, and even afterward in their more goth-metal days, ive dug em. I like some stuff off of ****ation and a Day. But Nymphetamine is too much. I want to hear Cradle of Filth, not some poppy cute Evanescence-kind of thing. It's not for me. But, it's obviously what they want to do, so I won't rate it low.

3/5.

I've considered giving this band another chance. My first impression was rather negative; Dani's vocals and appearance really turned me off, the guy looks like...oh....I don't know....like the "goths" in that one SNL skit. It was just so god**** ridiculous and melodramatic...

But, in getting into the band Therion, I came across the name Sarah Jezebel Deva, who frequently collaborates with COF, and it perked my interest. I was watching the Nymphetamine video and wasn't really impressed; voice sounded a little thin, like she was just trying to sound pretty rather than actually making music, but then I realized that Sarah wasn't the main girl singing for that song, but was doing the creepy backing vocals, which actually sound pretty badass. Of course, Dani's vocals are the main focus, so I don't know...I know that he's a talented vocalist, I respect what he does, it just doesn't....work for me very well. Perhaps I could get used to it...their music's decent, the guitarplaying is alot more melodic than some bands in the genre and their atmospheric work is pretty sweet. *shrug* Maybe I'll give 'em a shot.

Well, I thank you for that. I'm glad that you, unlike many, just said flat out that the music isn't your thing instead of giving a whole list of crap as to why nobody should like them. For good guitar playing and lots of atmosphere you might want to try Dusk and Her Embrace as well as this one.

I finally picked this one up, and was surprised to find that I actually like it alot. The last couple of tracks especially rock, although you've gotta love a song called "Gilded Cunt."

Good stuff, thanks for the review.

very well put, as the sounds and ideals disclosed in what they make are opposite to the ones im into altogether; tom petty, the kinks, the cars, van halen... come on, classic rock to 80s rock beats this stuff in all aspects of my mind. cof has done a good job on making there sound and working really hard to make their music, should i like it or not i give them that. (and i reealy dont like it)
Care to elaborate why it is a oxymoron to you?
I've posted it before, but its mostly just a personal opinion to me. I don't like a lot of melody and keyboards to try to add to the atmosphere to the music. To me, BM is supposed to be raw, fast, and extreme. A lot of Symphonic bands are not these.
And how can they take it to a new level when there has been far poppier metal bands that have been way more famous?
As Bartender said, its more about the "goth" kids going around saying that they are evil because they listen to CoF. I guess a lot of you have never met people like this, though. And by poppy, I mean more accessible, and more popular.
And to say "no one cares about the music, just about how "evil" he is", is a quite ignorant statement since you do not spokesperson for every one in the world.
I'm talking about the kids at my school; I guess I should have pointed that out. I thought that you all had had experiences with the goth kids.
And so what? A band with a vocalist with a crazy range does different vocal styles, is that a crime? Graveworm is pretty much like Cradle Of Filth, only they are from Italy, yet I don't see them get this kind of crap like Cradle does.
I'm not insulting his vocal talent, I'm talking about the kids who talk only about Dani and don't even pay attention to the music. That, or they rave about how extreme CoF is because they have double-bass and some blastbeats.
And Cradle Of Filth is not black metal, they are on the verge of gothic metal if you would read the lyrics since gothic music tends to have alot of romance themes in their music. And CoF has never wanted to be called black metal or do they claim to make black metal.
OK then, I don't think romantic lyrics or songs about love have any place in extreme music. Yes, I would much rather listens to songs about Satan and even gore lyrics than songs about love.
I would also hardly call Cradle Of Filth poppy, their lyrics do not seem very poppish to me nor does their sound. Just because alot of people like the band and the band produces their music well does not make them a pop band.
Again, I mean that they are more accessible and popular than other extreme bands
And stop trying to be a hardass dropping band names to make your self look "tr00" and "grim", it does not work.
I'm not trying to be a hardass or look "tr00" or "grim." I'm just saying that Anaal Nathrakh is a much more extreme and better IMO British band than CoF.

I'm just saying that the music is ultimately ruined by the fans, much like Slipknot. IMO, there are many other bands that deserve the credit CoF gets. Rereading my first post, I see that I was way too biased, and didn't even give the band a chance, but I've listened to the album since then, and don't like it. It has its moments, but its just not my thing.
Yeah, Im one of those people who wear baggy pants with a korn shirt, what's your point. Are you saying somebody that likes korn can't like anything but? The real posers whether you think so or not, are the ones who go around wearing classic rock shirts and/or korn shirts just because the name makes you look cool. I bought some Korn shirts because I liked them when they came out, when Take a Look... came out, I didn't pay any attention to them anymore. I got a Led Zep shirt because I enjoy their music, not because I knew there were 20 other people who liked them. The other day I seen a guy with a "Swan Song" shirt on and I asked him what his favorite song was, you can guess what he said...Stairway to Heaven, which isn't so bad, but then I asked what other songs he liked and he didn't know any other ones. Now, that is a sell out. Don't knock other bands and people on what they wear. Neo Goth kids are destroying metal culture...we must kill them all :D . By the way, if your one of those Goth kids who wear all black in summer, man, your a Dumb As s

Another point I'd like to make...
CoF got me started on the whole metal/blackmetal/anyother type genre. Now that I go and explore into these, CoF has to be my fav. Dani's voice gives variety and the music is melodic and flows in a nice way. I know many people like Cannibal Corpse, but to be honest, I don't care much for them because the instruments sound like crap and the the guys voice sounds like he swallowed a walrus. I know Dani doesn't have the best voice, but It's ahellava lot better than other bands out there.

P.S. None of the Goth Kids I see even know who Cradle of Filth is, but they all worship Kurt Cobain :upset:
I know what you mean when you said the bit about kurt cobain. but there arnt very many different shades of black, oh wait, yes theres only one shade of black. and as far as "looks" go, wearing black is hot, as in tempature meaning, and i live in texas where it is like 80 degrees outside in the middle of god **** december, and yet those goths, uh i mean punk, no wait metal heads, no satanist?and ah **** it, just those kids who wear black persistently, never cease to show up to school everyday wearing those dark clothes. i see the sweat flow. The idiots...
on a side note, san antonio, tx is the location.

^^ Interesting, I'm from Austin, and lived in San Antonio for like 6 years.

Anyways, I listen to alot of metal, but as far as clothing goes, I actually hate the color black. I think I might have 2 or 3 black shirts, max. I don't believe that the type of music you listen to should dictate the way you dress; they're completely unrelated in my mind. Especially since metal is definetly not the ONLY type of music I listen to; my favorite styles of music are metal and jazz, but I'll listen to just about anything if I see some musical value in it.

Which is why I gave Cradle of Filth a chance. Behind all of the ridiculously morbid and offensive imagery and lyrics, behind the corpse paint, black lipstick, and skirts, is a rather talented group of musicians.

Well, on a side note, there were quite a few of those people running around when I saw Cradle live two weeks ago. It was quite hilarious, some of them even had fake hair so they could have long dreadlocks to go with their white makeup, black eyeliner and lipstick, and full body fishnet thing. Strangely enough, those were also the people that stayed up on the second level and away from the floor (pussies) when the bands were playing.

And again, I urge all of you to give this band a chance if you've never heard them...especially if you're just dissmissing them because some of the fans are pure trash.
