MillionDead the meat and potatoes thing is what I love about Game. He’s more of a purist gangster rap artist which I really enjoy about him

Nah you're good DaHound, the concept of subjectivity in music riles me up more than it probably should lol

Yeah, it's almost apples and oranges. Meat and potatoes is sick too, for sure. I love all kinds of hip hop. I just love how out there and honestly experimental Kendrick went with this. It's disappointing too, cause DAMN was just not as good as even Section 80 to me. But that's digressing.

And I love a nice impassioned discussion tbh.

Cool. I have quite a few unorthodox opinions like loving traditionally panned albums and disliking traditionally beloved albums that I try and just explain my feelings without getting too antagonistic or blatantly contradictory.

Sometimes I come off that way and it really isn’t meant to be that way lol

Well, Kendrick's message for this album is respecting each other if you're on the same side and I find it beautiful that your discussion took this respectful turn.

for me as a beginner and jazz fan, this is the perfect entrance to hip hop. I also need to learn to keep up the pace with different flows to understand everything the rappers say, so yeah

The only thing that makes this a beginner hip-hip album is it’s cultural standing. There’s plenty of people who are in dire need of expanding their taste past this album, but they got stuck on this project for good reason. It covers a lot of bases.

" I just love how out there and honestly experimental Kendrick went with this"

i wouldn't go as far as to call this "out there" and "experimental" but kendrick pretty much single-handedly revitalized jazz rap with this which is praise enough on its own. but other notable artists like flylo really started the renaissance on a niche scale. kendrick is, and always has been really good at identifying promising music fads and repackaging them for the mainstream. his genius isn't in his innovation so much as it is in his level of insight into and level of discernment in regards to music and culture. so...

[2] to this. it's a shame that a lot of people don't dig further but as far as it goes this is far from a terrible mainstream staple.

that being said on a personal level i find kendricks albums suffer from the same problems that have plagued hip-hop since the very beginning: length, filler, and inconsistency.

But are there really people out there who listen to this and go "alright that's it, I've heard everything rap has to offer and will look no further"?

they may not say that to themselves but yes, in fact i'd argue that most people aren't as into music as anyone you'll find on a music forum and don't do much digging into music regardless of genre. the extent of their musical exploration is just "whatever is most visible".

Fair enough but I'm sure there's plenty of diehard rap fans who have heard every rap album and soundcloud mixtape ever created and still think this is one of the best rap albums ever

Well tbf that was never really a part of my argument. i'm sure there are. but from my personal experience, most heads are pretty elitist and obligatorily call kendrick overrated which i'm sure is partially just because of his popularity and status because elitists wouldn't be elitists without a nice big dose of condescending energy.

Anecdotally speaking most of the evidence I have supports this. I know a lot of heads, ones much bigger than myself, and virtually none of them listen to Kendrick or talk about him. I only have one exception of a self-proclaimed head but this particular person thinks Andre3000 is the greatest song writer of all time, and would probably list his favourite hip-hop as Outkast, RTJ, Kendrick, and Nas so lol. He's also one of the worst people I've ever met in my entire life.

On the flip side I know a lot of people who are very much not heads whose idea of a 'hip-hop' diet is Drake, the Weeknd, and shit like CoCo by O.T. Genesis and you bet your sweet patooty they all think this is the best hip-hop album of all time

But this is really all aside from the point. I was praising Kendricks and his successes, not trying to play him down.
