“ still trying to figure out why all hip hop is supposed to adhere to a singular identity.”
BecUse when it doesn’t you get casual, generic fans who ruin the concerts and start driving demand more and more towards over-produced poppy music and away from lyrics, poetry, and realness that defined the genre.
Hip hop was way better back in the day before hipsters like Pots started pretending to like it to look “urban”. Now most of the genre caters to people who like it superficially. That’s why hip hop losing its identity is bad.

The best part is Kendrick himself has echoed exactly what I’m saying. But since I’m saying it it’s automatically wrong.

I don’t like any of his other music tbh. The jazz/funk influences, associated harmonic choices, and organic production are what make this great.

Fans of older hip hop will find The Game’s discography is far better than Kendricks.
