Contrarian and obnoxious sometimes? Maybe. But overall a cool dude who knows a lot of good music.

He's gotten drastically better as time has gone on

to me this is the perfect mix of stupid, catchy, insane. still has some thrash left, its well played but zero tech shit or any pretense of experimentation. lyrics are so dumb its almost combating schuldiner's recent thesaurus purchase. its basically everything dm isnt nowadays, which is both good and bad imo, because while im glad everyone wants to sound like incantation (and a bit less glad everyone wants to sound like entombed), i really wish one of these 20 year olds would write something in the vein of massacre, cancer, etc...neither of which are as heavy as this imo. most of your "proud to be stupid" type bands really dont go beyond mortician or early carcass

i may just be saying that cause this was my first proper dm release and i was always really struck by how insanely single-minded and ridiculous this record is in comparison to the stuff id heard before this (bits of opeth, which i hated, and mid 90s death, which ruled but wasnt heavy)

theres also pretty much nonstop immolation and morbid angel worship nowadays, i love the dissonance and shit but one of these kids needs to get in a serious accident so they can be as stupid as glen benton

autopsy is one band that seems to balance the stupid with a true atmosphere and shit, not that its artsy or anything but ya

i mean carcass rules but they also were like "hey we are artists. im serious" and shit, but im talking more about random modern bands i hear. like stupidity is typically in the gore realm and the satanic shit is kinda strictly the domain of bm or black thrash now

i need to start a band but its like you only meet death metal boomers who ONLY know deicide, or its some guitar center kid who doesnt like anything before the faceless came out

I got a best of Deicide cd when I was first getting into metal and I thought it was the greatest shit ever. Still really love Dead by Dawn and Apart from those tracks and maybe a few others Blaspherereion. I don't return to this band often anymore. I will say that Amon compilation is pretty cool. One of those demos has the most demonic sounding vocals I've ever heard. I always enjoyed Obituary. They were another gateway band for me. Roadrunner bands were important for me discovering death metal because of BMG musics free cd deals. Frozen in Time was the first Obituary cd I got and although it never gets mentioned I loved the instrumental Redneck Stomp so much that it was the first song I learned on guitar when I got one shortly after

first 2 deicide records will always be a perpetual drunk go to for me. i listened to once upon the cross and serpents of the light earlier this year first time in forever and while pretty solid riffwise its just not as memorable. its like, when park hears this album, he hears what i hear on serpents of the light probably lol

It's been so long since I've tried jamming Serpents tbh but I was on an Apple Music death metal playlist and a song from it came on that had a riff I really dug. I never got into Legion but I've been meaning to give it another shot. I know a few people who call it their favorite death metal album. Once Upon a Cross has it's moments but nothing noteworthy enough for me to go back. I remember loving Fuck Your God back in the day because of how obnoxious it was lol. Bought Scars shortly after though and remember being pretty disappointed
