As someone who grew up with a junkie dad who OD'd and passed away a couple years ago, seeing him live the way he did was my deterrent from stuff like heroin and meth. He even offered it to me a few times and I was like hell nah

Yeah sorry bro.
Benzo's and opiates ain't much better tho tbh. The dependency and withdrawals on those are hell on earth. Alcohol too if your a heavy alcoholic. Drugs have a place and time but a lot of them cause more problems than they are worth tbh

Sorry to bring it to a dark place but it's the truth for me. If seeing that life firsthand doesnt steer you away, I dont know what would. I appreciate the condolences though, brothers
Also, agreed that alcohol can be just as bad when used heavily. My dad himself had that issue but there was a friend of his I met a few times that died from drinking listerine. My dad told me he got him bottles of liquor in the past because he was afraid he was gonna die from the withdrawals he was having. He grew up in a small town in Kentucky where things like this were common lol

I live like 10 miles from Kentucky haha. Oh your good sorry about your dad. It's same way here heavy drug use small town boredom escape with drugs. Yeah alcohol and benzos are the only two drugs that can kill you from the withdrawals it's not a game if your a heavy user of either. I know first hand.
Heroin and meth are both very popular in the Kentucky illinois area. That must of been hell growing up seeing a family member hooked on them

There isn't really an illicit drug, or a pharmaceutical with potential for recreational use that I haven't done - I've done drugs nearly every day of my life for the past 20 years...
But it isn't the drugs themselves that are bad/evil - it is what it makes the user do to acquire them. Regardless, they're a method of escapism and/or a coping strategy when people find themselves under stress. Being schizophrenic, I find that more than anything, the drugs keep me sane (or it is just my brain cannot cope without the alterations in brain chemistry that they cause). I have no regrets in what I've done drug wise and if anything I've learnt to see them in a slightly different light than most people do. I'm not necessarily advocating or condoning the use of drugs - but there are different levels.
Never had any major issues with alcohol though - which is probably a good thing. But I know if I was to give up drugs I'd probably end up substituting them with alcohol and quite frankly, I'd rather stick with the drugs than let that occur.

Sputnikdrugs haha.
Yeah bro don't. Alcohol is a hell hole. Before you know it your waking up on the morning shaking and having seizures and shit when you don't have your 5th of whiskey to gussle down everyday.

I’ve done them all, been addicted to them all. 35 years of addiction and alcoholism. Finally, at 44, I’m 14 months sober.
But yeah been hooked on them all multiple times throughout my life. Like heavily physically dependent, 24/7 use. Alcohol, opiates (heroin and pills), coke, ketamine, have taken acid/shrooms/mescaline/dmt hundreds of times (literally), Benzos (boring, but when it’s all an addict has, he gets addicted), meth…
It’s obviously been a long and hard road. And I don’t recommend it, but I wouldn’t change a thing because it made me an incredibly strong and resilient person with wisdom (due to having to learn so many fucking lessons lol), clarity and can go through anything life throws at me because it can’t measure up one iota to the monster of addiction.
Some fun times in there though! lol. I work in a treatment center now, have done so for two years. I relapsed at my first treatment center job (where I happened to go for treatment 3 times before sobriety sticking) and was let go due to it. Then I went to get sober at this other treatment center, which is now where I work.
It’s like any rehab I go to is a job interview lol, it’s incredibly strange how it happened twice. But hey! They hire me because I know what the fuck I’m talking about. And god knows I should after 30+ fucking years of experience, plus studying psychology, abnormal psychology and substance abuse/chemical dependency.
Oh, and agreed that heavy alcohol use is as bad as it gets. It wreaks absolute havoc on body and mind. It’s poison that systematically deteriorates EVERYTHING, like pouring acid down your throat. I’ve seen lots of wet brain cases at work. NOT pretty.
Shit, even worse than opiates in a sense. Opiates actually aren’t hard on the body — they’re incredibly addictive once you flip that switch — hardest class of drugs to get off, was hooked daily for 10 years, been on suboxone for 7 years — but not physically and mentally destructive really. There’s the overdose risk of course…but alcohol poisoning is also a thing, not to mention drunk driving deaths.
It amazes me that alcohol is legal really, people are just so used to it and it’s so normalized that they’re almost oblivious to how fucking awful the shit is.

Yes. Alcohol is the most destructive drug, both to the user and their environment.

I love a beer or 2 every few weeks, but never really crave more. This is probably my 2nd fav Ulcerate album after Everything is Fire. Further Opening the Wounds is one of their best songs.
